Murray Gill Chappell
It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of Murray
Gill Chappell, 98, of Moncton, youngest son of Leslie and Maude
(Wilbur) Chappell at The Veterans’ Health Centre on
Wednesday, November 15, 2017.
Born in Pictou, Nova Scotia, his mother died in childbirth
and Murray and his twin sister, Maudie, were brought to Moncton by
their grandparents, Alfred and Annie Trites, where they lived until
they were 14 years old and went out to work, because their grandmother
passed away. Murray worked for many farmers and then got employment
with Swifts Canadian Co.
A Veteran of WWII, he served overseas with the R.C.E.M.E.
with four years’ service. When the war broke out, he and 11
of his friends felt it was their duty to join the Army and they were
shipped overseas. When he returned, he was employed with Swifts for 35
years. After they closed, he helped drill wells and was an
electrician’s helper until 1990.
Murray enjoyed doing crafts in his workshop, especially
bobsleds with horses and wagons and small hand sleds with Christmas
trimming. He gave them to over 60 friends and family. Murray was the
oldest living member of Hillside Baptist Church and a member of the 3C
and a Trustee for many years.
Murray will be sadly missed by two sons, Frank
Chappelle (Joan) of North Granville PE and Keith Chappell (Jean) of
Lutes Mountain; two daughters, Susan Coates (Wayne) of Moncton and
Wanda Chappell-Bourgeois (Ed) of Turtle Creek; 13 grandchildren; 13
great grandchildren; one great great granddaughter; several nieces,
nephews and cousins; special friend, Vera Erb.
Besides his parents, Murray was predeceased by his wife,
Effie (Hopper) Chappell (1998); daughter, Beth Fenton (2007); son,
Murray (2012); grandsons, Steven Chappell (1983) and Aaron Bourgeois
(2012); five brothers, Harold, Cecil, Frank, Walter and Hugh and twin
sister, Maudie McConnell.
Visitation at Fergusons Funeral Home, 1657 Mountain Road,
Moncton (858-1995) on Sunday from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 pm.
Moncton Legion Branch # 6 Memorial Service on Sunday at 4:00 pm at the
Funeral Home. A Service to celebrate and honor Murray’s life
will be held at Fergusons Funeral Home Chapel on Monday, November 20,
2017 at 11:00 am with Pastors Jerry Reddy and Gordon Horsman
officiating. Reception in the Funeral Home Reception Centre following
the service. Interment will be in Fair Haven Memorial
