Seton (nee Duthie), Phyllis Elsie, B.A.
1923-2017
Died peacefully at the age of 94 in Pointe Claire, Quebec on December 8, 2017. She was a cherished and loving wife to Leonard (deceased), a devoted mother to Geoffrey, Christopher, Rosemary, and Victoria (Pierre), and a special grandmother to Nicholas and Tristan.
Phyllis was born in Hartlepool, England to George and Elizabeth (nee Dixon) Duthie and she emigrated to Canada in 1927, settling and growing up in Montreal. She attended the High School of Montreal and later graduated from McGill University in Arts ’43, having studied literature and languages. It is at McGill where she met her future husband, Leonard (Arts ’39; Law ’42) and she became the “girl under the clock.”
A woman of many interests, Phyllis was a consummate homemaker, excelling in cookery and baking, and boasting a veritable library of cookbooks and a vast Gourmet Magazine collection. Phyllis was a lover of classical music, and she herself was an accomplished pianist. This love extended to opera and in her later years, she and Leonard travelled on numerous occasions to New York City and to the venerable Met to hear beloved operas. She was a skilled seamstress who made all her own clothes, including evening gowns, and even tackling a Seton tartan kilt. She and Leonard were each other’s best friends who really did everything together. They were long-time members of the Scottish Country Dance Society, going out on Tuesday evenings for years to participate in Scottish dances, and members of the Royal Commonwealth Society. Phyllis travelled extensively in the UK and Europe, making approximately 15 trips overseas with Leonard. They loved to research a particular country during the winter months and then visit the country in summer. Other passions included reading (Phyllis watched very little television, except for Masterpiece Theatre) and animals (especially her childhood dog, Piper, and later, Inky the cat).
A special thank you to all the staff and volunteers at the Bayview in Pointe Claire, who cared for mum so kindly and professionally over the years and always did their best to make it her second home.
Visitation will take place at the J.J. Cardinal Funeral Home (560 Lakeshore Drive, Dorval) on Thursday, December 14, 2017 from 2-5 p.m. and from 7-9 p.m. A funeral will take place Friday, December 15 at 11 a.m., also at the J.J. Cardinal Funeral Home.
Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Mme Phyllis Elsie Seton nee Duthie 1923
