Obituary of Mary Dean
DEAN, Mary Elsie (nee Cockburn)
September 2, 1922- November 22, 2017
Passed away peacefully in her 96th year at Shalom Manor in Grimsby, on November 22nd after a long and vibrant life. Predeceased by her husband of 59 years, Gordon Howlett Dean, she will be deeply missed by her three daughters Patricia Mary de Koning (Gerry), Kathryn Jane Dean and Charlotte Anne Dean; her grandchildren Carolyn Johnson (Jeremy), David de Koning (Elizabeth) and Peter de Koning (Michelle); and her great-grandchildren, Miles, Sophie, Adrien, and Nora. Born in Queenston, Ontario, and raised in Puslinch, she later became a Registered Nurse, training at Hamilton General Hospital during World War II and nursing there after the war. She was loved by friends and family for her kindness to all. She was active in the community, on the family farm, and in Gordon’s political life. She was a member of Wesley United Church, the UCW, the Women’s Institute, the I.O.D.E. and was a Life Member of the Stoney Creek Horticultural Society. We will never forget the twinkle in her eyes, her beautiful smile and the beloved gardens that she created. Cremation has taken place. Friends will be received at the Donald V. Brown Funeral Home, 36 Lake Avenue Drive, Stoney Creek, on Thursday, November 30, 2017, from 7 to 9 p.m. The Funeral Service will be held in the Funeral Home Chapel on Friday, December 1, 2017 at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Hamilton Health Sciences Foundation or the McMaster Children’s Hospital Foundation.
