Mary Strelioff
October 10, 1918 – December 25, 2017
With great sadness, the family of the late Mary Strelioff, beloved wife of the late Bill Strelioff, announce the passing of their beloved mother, baba and aunty at the Canora Gateway Lodge on December 25, 2017, at the age of 99 years. Mary was born October 10, 1918, to Timothy and Pearl (Ostoforoff) Dergousoff on a farm near Buchanan, SK. In 1919, her family moved to a farm near Veregin, SK and in 1924, to a subsequent farm near Mikado, SK. Unfortunately, her mother died when Mary was 10 and her younger sister, Pearl, was 8. At a very young age, Mary and Pearl helped their father on the farm, with a great deal of assistance from her family and particularly her brother Bill and his wife Mabel. Mary learned the skills of cooking, sewing and knitting from a very young age. She excelled in these (and more) and for many years she provided for her family and her extended family. In 1934, Mary married Bill Strelioff and moved to the Strelioff farm west of Canora, SK. She raised her family in the newly built home and was an active partner in the family farm which included her in-laws and Bill’s brother, Nick, and his wife, Annie. This was truly a bustling farm that grew to include breeding Percheron horses and Shorthorn cattle. Over those many busy farming years, Mary not only helped with the various farming activities, she also raised chickens, milked cows, had a large garden, and of course prepared the meals. Her passion for cooking and preparing the many traditional Russian dishes became popular and sought after by her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Baba’s borscht was the best! Mary lived in and maintained the farm house and yard well into her 80’s before passing on the home to her grandson Kevin and his wife Kelly. Bill and Mary had three children, Annette in 1936, Ron in 1945 and Billy in 1951. Each of their children in turn had three children, a total of nine grandchildren. Bill and Mary were committed to their families. To the benefit of each of the families, they were active in the raising of all their grandchildren. Baba and Deda became an important part of each of the grandchildren’s lives.
Baba is dearly loved and will be greatly missed by her family. Mary is predeceased by her parents, Timothy and Pearl; her husband, Bill; her children, Annette and Ron; brothers: Bill, Nick, John, and Mike; and her sister, Pearl.
She is survived by her son, Bill (Peggy) and their children: Sacha (Ryan), Sean (Heidi) and Ashlee (Josh); her son-in-law, John Zeeben and his children: MaryBeth (Ken), Greg (Judy) and Gary (Kelly); her daughter-in-law, Audrey Strelioff (Rollie Wilcox) and children: Dana (Joseph), Jason and Kevin (Kelly); and her fourteen
