It is with heavy hearts that we announce that Mary Ilma passed away peacefully on November 11th, 2017 at the age of 92 years. Our beloved mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt, great-aunt and friend, Mary Ilma will be forever missed by her loving children: Holly (Stephen), Christopher (Lisa) and Howard (Trish), her six treasured grandchildren: Evan, Alicia, Vanessa, Aeden, Jared and Nathan, her younger sisters: Juliet and Marion, her beloved brothers: Hilary, Romeo and Roy and their families, along with numerous cousins, nieces, nephews sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law and dear friends. She was predeceased by her parents Isabella and Guilherme, five brothers: Aurelio, John, Emmanuel, Julian and Michael, as well as by her loving husband George, who has waited thirty long years for this heavenly reunion.
Mary Ilma lived a blessed, lively and wonderful life. Born in Georgetown, British Guiana (now Guyana), she spent her childhood in that beautiful, warm climate where she grew up alongside her eight brothers and two sisters. Mary Ilma was the first woman on either side of her family to achieve a post-secondary education, travelling to New York to attend business college. She then began a career as a stenographer, working in Trinidad for an oil company. Mary Ilma moved to Canada in 1953, where she lived with her mother and most of her siblings in a legendary house on Somerled Avenue in Montreal; it became the hub of activity for much of the family’s Guyanese friends. She continued her career in Canada, working for both CP and CN Railways. A short time later, Mary Ilma vacationed with her sister Marion in Vancouver, where she met a handsome man named George, who was on vacation from Edmonton. So Mary Ilma’s next move was to Edmonton, where she and George married, bought a home and raised their family. Mary Ilma lived in that family home until failing health caused her to move to assisted care.
The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to the staff Sherwood Care for their kindness, support and care shown to Mom during her time living there.
