MORRIS: Mary Beatrice Monro “Bea”, WRCNS

Bea died peacefully at Sunnybrook Veterans Centre K wing in Toronto on Sunday April 2, 2017 in her 97th year. Predeceased by her parents D. Eric M. Grier and Catherine A. Mackenzie, and her husband Alexander S. Morris (1998), she is survived by her children Shelagh E. Morris and husband John A. Cain of Paris, ON; Mary C. Morris of Squamish, B.C; and Iain A. Morris of St. Catharines, ON. She is also survived by her sister Katharine N. Hooke (the late Harry G. Hooke) of Peterborough, ON, and her nieces Pamela N. Hooke of Toronto and K. Suzanne Hooke of Peterborough, and several Morris nieces and nephews in Canada and the U.K. Bea was born in Toronto and grew up on the family farm in Lakefield, ON. With her indomitable spirit, Bea enlisted and proudly served her country during WWII as a Canadian Navy “WREN” in Halifax and London, England. While in the U.K., she met her future husband Alex, a young naval architect from Greenock, Scotland. Bea and Alex married in Lakefield in 1946 and eventually settled in St. Catharines where their three children were born and raised. Bea was a long-time member of St. George’s Anglican Church where she served on the Alter Guild and with the Bishop Beattie Fellowship. She was also a life member of the St. Catharines General Hospital Auxiliary. Bea had a passion for the Arts especially theatre, music and painting which she shared with her family. She was an avid reader, a gifted needle crafter, and in her youth a keen, competitive athlete. A good friend to many, Bea also had great affection for cats, and for Stony Lake where she spent her summers on the family island until the age of 96. The family gratefully acknowledges the support services provided by Paramed and the March of Dimes in St. Catharines which enabled Bea to remain in her own home as she so wanted. The family is especially grateful for the extraordinary care, compassion and support Bea and her family received from the staff on K2West at the Veterans Centre particularly over the last two weeks. In accordance with Bea’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A celebration of Bea’s life will be held in Lakefield at a later date this summer, with interment of ashes in Hillside Cemetery. Charitable donations may be made to the Lincoln County Humane Society or St. George’s Anglican Church, St. Catharines.
