Martin Vernon (Millarville) - May 25

Martin Vernon (Millarville) – May 25, 1934 – May 2, 2017

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of our father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, martin Vernon at the age of 82 years. Martin was proud to be a native Calgarian. He grew up in the Sunalta area with his younger sisters Sylvia and Elsa, attending Sunalta Elementary and Junior High. With their parents Henry and Doris, the young family often ventured outside Calgary doing day trips to Bragg Creek, Banff and Ghost Dam. Martin attended Western Canada High School where he excelled… in Sports, particularly Football, culminating in a provincial Championship win in 1953. It was at Western Canada High School where he met the love of his life, Lorraine Williamson. They married soon after and started their life together in a home that Martin built in South Calgary. The two quickly became active members of the Community and made life-long neighborhood friends. Martin and Lorraine welcomed five children, Terry (Debbie), Danny (Sue) Kevin (Sherry), Michael (Jane) and Rachelle (Shelley). Martin continued his love of sports by coaching his children in hockey and serving as director of the South West Athletic Association (now the Calgary Royals). Martin followed in his father’s footsteps starting his own painting company, Martin Vernon Painting and Decorating. He taught his children the value of hard work and prudent planning, even working alongside Kevin in later years after he assumed the family business. Martin and Lorraine fulfilled a life- long dream by moving to an acreage in Millarville in the early 1990’s. Partnering with his son Terry, he took great pleasure in raising Simmental cattle. He loved living in the country and was content working in his yard and garden. Martin and Lorraine would regularly pitch in and babysit grandchildren (and dogs) for extended weekends at the farm, to help their grateful parents. Martin was a hands-on grandpa, often jumping up at meals to walk around the house with a crying baby so that the parents could have a break. He was a very proud supporter of his grandchildren; Cameron, Jenny (Joe), Marty, Jake, Casey, Lauren, Breanne, Amelia, Matthew, John and Will. Martin loved to cheer them on in hockey, soccer, rodeo and show jumping, coming out to watch them regularly. Martin was fortunate to be able to support the next generation as well, his great grandchildren; Oliver, Zoe, Finn, Petra and Josef. Martin was blessed to find happiness in his later years with Joyce Teskey who adored and supported him and his family after Lorraine’s passing and became a beloved part of the Vernon family. The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses at the Oilfields General Hospital in Black Diamond for their wonderful care of Martin over the past years, his well known wit endeared many of them to him.
