Obituary for Marian Grace Anderson (Marney)
Anderson, Marian Grace (Marney) passed away peacefully in Ottawa in her 96th year on December 1, 2017, surrounded by her family. Marney was born in Kindersley, Saskatchewan in 1922, the much loved only child of Percy and May Dixson. Predeceased by her husbands Walton (d. 1996) and Bob Knowles (d. 2003), she is survived by her daughter Dianne (George), and two sons, Paul (Brenda) and Chris (Jeffie). Cherished by her five grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and four great grandchildren. She also leaves behind Bob’s children and their families, about whom she cared deeply. Marney had a happy and eventful life filled with family, friends, music, career and her church and community work.
Marney received a BSc from the University of Saskatchewan in 1942 and it was there in Saskatoon that she met Walton. Marney and Walt were married for 52 years until his death in 1996. They had a wonderful, full life together in Chicago, Vancouver, Ottawa and Accra, Ghana. Marney was a Girl Guide Commissioner in Vancouver for many years. She loved the girls and they reciprocated, some still keeping in touch. Running the annual tenting Guide Camp on the Sechelt Peninsula was a highlight of many summers. Once her children were launched, Marney returned to school to become re-certified as a Haematology Technologist and subsequently had a very rewarding career at the Ottawa Civic Hospital. As with everything Marney embraced, it was the people who mattered most and in this case it was her colleagues and their patients. Upon her retirement, Marney volunteered, played bridge and carefully watched over the progress of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Nothing made “Gammy” and later “GG” happier than spending time with them.
Marney and Walt loved to travel and over the years visited most of the continents. After Walt died, Marney and Bob were married in Hawaii and subsequently enjoyed several trips to Maui where she would play for hours in the (gentle) surf.
Marney had a wonderful sense of humour and an even more wonderful smile. She lost neither, even as age began to take its toll. We are all going to miss the long sessions over many cups of coffee as we laughed together and discussed life.
Our thanks and eternal gratitude go to the many friends who visited and enriched her life, especially in the last two years. Special thanks to Hilda Sabadash, George Clifford, Roseann Wurtz and also to Jesseka Deruiter and the rest of the amazing, caring staff
at Starwood Extendicare.
The funeral service for Marney will be held at Glebe St. James United Church,
650 Lyon Street (entrance on First Avenue) on Saturday, December 16th at 2 PM followed by a reception for all in Fraser Hall at the church.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Starwood Family Support Group or to the Centretown Emergency Food Centre would be gratefully accepted.
