Margaret Ritchie - May 2

Margaret Ritchie – May 2, 1925 – September 6, 2017 (age 92)

May 2, 1925 – September 6, 2017 (age 92)
It is with sadness that the Ritchie family announces the passing of Mary Margaret Ritchie, nee Norell, on September 6, 2017 at the age of 92. Marg was a long-time resident of Dauphin, Manitoba but she passed away at the McCreary Personal Care Home.
Margaret is survived by her only daughter, Brette, of Toronto; Brette’s husband David Hunter; and by her four grandchildren, Andrew (Toronto), Mark (Toronto), William (Toronto) and Kristina (Edinburgh). She was predeceased by her husband Dr. Gordon Ritchie and by her parents, Axel and Christina Norell and her 3 siblings, Alice, Mabel and Kenneth. She is also survived by her brother Ken’s wife, Donna Norell as well as her niece, Catherine Ritchie, her nephew, Raymond Ritchie and nephew in law, Walter Pierson.
Margaret was born in 1925 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. However the family moved to a farm near Balmoral, Manitoba during the great depression. So she was at heart a farm girl with the values of hard work, honesty, and kindness. Margaret excelled at school and, after graduating from high school, received a degree in Social Work in 1947 from United College, now the University of Winnipeg. She then worked in Winnipeg until she was transferred to Dauphin in 1950. Here she met a handsome local boy newly graduated as a doctor and they married. After a brief time in England where Gordon was specializing on Ophthalmology, Margaret returned to Dauphin where she has been ever since. Margaret was active in the community serving on the Fair Board and the Hospital Auxiliary. She was an avid curler and in 1984 was the President of the Manitoba Ladies Curling Association. She was also a member of Toast Mistresses and an avid reader especially of science fiction. She also was a great seamstress and an excellent knitter whether she was knitting matching sweaters for the curling team or outfits for the grandkids. She had a reputation for making the best lemon meringue pies and her grandkids still think her apple pies with the secret ingredient pie crust can’t be beat.
Margaret had many friends, many of whom have passed before her. All will miss her especially her friends at Ferndale Manor where she spent her last 17 years and where she was an integral part of the community serving on the board for many years. She will also be missed by her friends at Clearwater Lake and her other “daughter” Kathleen Larson, as well as her dear friends in England, The Weatherall and Mollison families.
The family would like to thank the staff at the McCreary Personal Care Home for making the last days of Margaret’s life so pleasant and comfortable. They would also like to thank all Margaret’s friends and neighbors in Ferndale for the care and kindness as Margaret “slowed down” in the last few years, especially Grace Lampard who went above and beyond on many occasions. Special thanks as well to Roy and Bya Jewsbury for their help and kindness over the years.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Lupus Canada, the Dauphin Regional Health Centre, or the Dauphin & District Community Foundation.
