Margaret (Maggie) Foxlee Owen was born in Minnesota in 1922, and moved with her parents and sisters to California in 1924, where she spent her childhood and young adult years.
Maggie grew up in a house full of music, and learned to play the piano, organ, and flute. She enjoyed a lifelong love of music. She was an honours student in high school and at Pepperdine College, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in Biology. She met William Larry Owen in college, and married him in 1947, after his return from the War.
Maggie and Larry lived around the Los Angeles area, where Larry pursued a teaching career and positions as principal of two schools, until the pivotal year of 1963. In July of that year, they took their three children and left for a grand adventure in the isolated ‘bush’ country north of Fort St. James, in northern BC. A few years into their adventure, Larry and his mining partner (and future son-in-law) discovered, developed, and ultimately sold the “jade mountain” jade mine at Ogden Mountain, BC.
Maggie recounted the family’s adventures in her published book “So We Bought The Town.” In the passage of time, Maggie left behind many friends in Fort St. James and moved to Smithers, BC, to be near two of her grown children.
Margaret is survived by daughter Lynlee Owen Burleigh (Ron); daughter Leslee Owen Porayko (Stan, d.); son Everett Owen (Kimberley); grandchildren Kristin Joiner Spooner, Jeffrey Joiner; Jennifer Porayko, Allen Porayko; Derek Owen, Danielle Owen Silviera, Eric McLean, and Miles McLean; and eight great grandchildren; sister Winifred Foxlee Cross in San Diego and five nieces and a nephew in the United States.
A Memorial Service will be held Friday, July 14th at 2:00 pm in the Fellowship Baptist Church in Smithers.
