Margaret ‘Evelyn’ Burke – 1916-2017

Margaret ‘Evelyn’ Burke
1916-2017
BURKE, Margaret “Evelyn” – Age 100, formerly of
River Bourgeois, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 19th, 2017,
surrounded by family and friends, at her home at the Richmond Villa.
Born July 30th, 1916, Evelyn lived a long,
wonderful life, personifying grace and kindness. She married her great
love, the late Victor Burke, in 1940, and they celebrated their
71st wedding anniversary before his passing in
2012.
Evelyn was a pillar of her community, as a founding member of
the CWL and running both the store and post office on South Side River
Bourgeois for 41 years, with Victor. After closing the store in 1980,
she spent her time taking care of her family, especially her
grandchildren. She enjoyed crossword puzzles, cards, and Jeopardy with
good company and conversation. She was an active member of St. John
the Baptist parish in River Bourgeois and continued to have strong,
unwavering faith until the very end. Her compassionate, gentle manner
and constant smile will be sorely missed by her family and
community.
Evelyn is survived by daughters, Linda (Blaine) Rafuse,
Dartmouth, and Debbie (Gerry) Bidochka, River Bourgeois. She was
adored by her grandchildren, Gina (Joey) MacDonald, Donelda (Chris),
Ryan, Amanda (Chris), Krista (Ryan) Ratchford, Bradley, and Robyn. The
lights of her life were her great-grandchildren, Nick, Alandra, Rory,
Clayton, Nyahzia, and Aiyanna. She will be missed by many special
nieces, nephews and extended family. She was the last surviving member
of her immediate family and was predeceased by her parents, Henry and
Mary Fougere, and siblings Hattie, Katie, Peter, Charlie, John James,
Amable, Mary Charlotte, Annie May, Walter, William, Ginger, and George
Leo.
Visitation will take place at the River Bourgeois Funeral
Home, from 2-9 pm on Friday, July 21st. Funeral
mass will be held at 10am on Saturday, July
22nd, from St. John the Baptist Church in River
Bourgeois with burial to follow in the parish cemetery. The community
is invited to a reception at the River Bourgeois Senior’s
Centre immediately following. In lieu of flowers, donations in
Evelyn’s memory can be made to the Richmond
Villa.
Special thanks to the staff of the Richmond Villa for their
unwavering compassion, amazing dedication to Grandma’s care,
and continued support to our family, and to everyone who filled
Grandma’s final days with love. Words of comfort may be
forwarded to the family at www.haverstocks.com.
