Margaret Power passed away peacefully in her sleep at home on December 10, 2016. Margaret was born and educated in Saskatoon where she graduated from Bedford Road Collegiate in 1951 and Saskatoon City Hospital in 1954. She worked as a Registered Nurse in Swift Current and Royal Columbian Hospital, New Westminster, BC before returning to Saskatoon, and then joined her family in Victoria in 1959, where she worked at St Joseph’s Hospital. Margaret maintained her relationships with the City Hospital Nurses Alumni and regularly attended reunions.
Margaret was active in sports and an avid curler through her life, including playing with the Victoria Curling Club. She took a particular interest in the Welsh Corgi Club in Victoria and the Vancouver Island Dog Fanciers Association helping to organize many events. She especially enjoyed the company of her own Irish Setters and took great pride in each of their championships. Margaret was passionate about her projects and the tasks she set for herself were always carried out with great success.
Margaret loved to travel. Her favourite place to be, other than Victoria, was her father’s birthplace, Edinburgh and the Scottish countryside. She attended St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church since coming to Victoria.
Margaret was a caring person, looking after her mother, Ellen, at home until her death in 2007 and always had time for, and interest in her nieces, Linda (Finlayson) and Andrea (Fong) and her nephew, Bruce (Fong).
Margaret was pre-deceased by her parents, Walter and Ellen (Hutchinson) Power in 1986 and 2007. She is survived by her sister, Barbara (Leonard) Fong, Nanoose; her brother, James (Reid Gilbert) Power, West Vancouver; her nieces, Linda (Scott) Finlayson, Andrea (Bateman) Fong, Victoria; her nephew, Bruce (Lee-Ann) Fong, Parksville and her grand nephews, Nolin and Logan Fong and Sean and Jack Bateman.
Margaret’s family expresses appreciation to her many friends and neighbours who were so helpful and considerate in the past several years. In particular, thank you to Kathy Campbell and Donna Guns.
Margaret will be missed, dearly, by everyone who knew her, most especially, by her sister, Barbara and her brother, James.
At Margaret’s request, there will be no funeral. An urn interment will take place at Ross Bay Cemetery at a later date.
