SUMMERS, Mara 1953 – 2017 With tremendous sadness, we announce the death of Mara on November 16, just 8 weeks after a pancreatic cancer diagnosis. During this period she experienced an outpouring of love and was astonished by the kind care she received from friends, the Cancer Agency, home-visiting PRT and at Victoria Hospice. Mara was predeceased by her Mom, Lisa, in 2016. Mara is survived by her cherished ‘sister’, Melrose Kim-Boado.
Mara lived life to the fullest, from long-distance running, to the outstanding Belly Dance and Polynesian Dance Groups that she founded and performed in, to her years at BC Ferries. Her dedication to animals was reflected in her two malanois, Hope and Tango, and her whippets Fame and Vegas. Mara’s passion is visible in her breeding and showing of shelties and whippets through Gallantry Kennels and she was an internationally respected breeder of beautiful Bengal cats through Dazzledots.
In Mara’s heaven she will have the ‘best seat in the house’ to cheer on Hope and Tango in their future agility endeavors with Susan and Melyssa, who so graciously took them into their own families. Mara was also so grateful to Blair for welcoming Fame and Vegas. In lieu of flowers, please visit www.bccancerfoundation.com where a donation in Mara’s name will be directed to the Pancreatic Cancer Initiative.
A gathering of Mara’s friends will be held in Colwood on Saturday, December 16. Please email islandcypress@yahoo.com for more information.
