Obituary of Louis Mercer, New Waterford
It is with sadness that we, the family, announce the passing of Louis Mercer, 89, of New Waterford, on Thursday, December 28, 2017 at the Maple Hill Manor.
Born in New Waterford, he was a son of the late Isaac and Mary Emma (Crane) Mercer.
Louis worked in No.’s 16 and 12 Collieries for over 30 years. He was town councillor for several years prior to becoming Mayor of New Waterford in 1974 and again from 1980-82. In earlier years, Louis was a member of the Masonic Lodge, New Waterford Branch. He truly enjoyed talking about politics and coal mining. Louis also enjoyed doing yardwork, going to his summer home on the Mira, ice fishing and of course, all his fur babies over the years. He loved his wife’s cooking and baking. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with family and friends.
Surviving are his children, Judy, Johnny, Valerie, and Darlene; daughter-in-law, Linda; sister-in-law, Audrey; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Besides his parents, Louis was predeceased by his wife, Juliana ‘Jan’; son, Gary; brother, Wilfred and son-in-law, Ron.
Cremation has taken place. A visitation will be held on Sunday, December 31, from 1 p.m. until the time of the service at 2 p.m. all in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home Chapel, 380 Smith Street, New Waterford, with Rev. Duncan Roach officiating. Burial will be in Union Grove Cemetery, Scotchtown. Family flowers only. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the S.P.C.A. or the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Online expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family at: www.vjmcgillivray.ca.
