Lorna Olsgard
Lorna Elizabeth (Darby) Olsgard passed away peacefully with family by her side on December 19, 2017, in Swift Current, Saskatchewan. She was a loving, caring, wise woman who was much loved by all her family and will always be missed. Lorna was born January 10, 1926, in Cabri, SK, to Ira and Lillian Darby. The first 18 years of her life were spent on the family farm four miles north of Shackleton, which was homesteaded in 1909 by her father. Lorna retained ownership of this land until her passing, which is still actively farmed. She attended Shackleton School, graduating grade 12 in 1944. She then attended Normal School in Saskatoon where she was editor of the yearbook and valedictorian for the graduating class in June 1945. Lorna taught at Waldensian Valley, Webb and Pittville schools. She remained a teacher at heart her entire life and always had a thirst for learning. She taught her family everything from local history to how to fillet a fish. On July 22, 1947, she married Owen Edward Olsgard. They lived in Hazlet for 27 years and raised two boys and two girls. After Owen’s tragic death in a traffic accident in 1974, Lorna moved to Saskatoon with daughter Wanda, where she lived until 2009. Lorna then made the move to The Bentley in Swift Current where she lived a happy, social life with many friends. She was always up for a game of cards, Scrabble or working on a jigsaw puzzle. The final few months of her life were spent at Cypress House. Lorna was always an active member of the Hazlet community where she spent many hours canvassing for charities. She was a charter member of the Ladies Auxiliary to Hazlet Legion Branch 202 and was later made a life member. Many hours were spent as a volunteer in the United Church, UCW, Sunday school, Boy Scouts, 4H, Explorers, Figure Skating Club and PTA. All her life she was an avid knitter and sewer, making many garments and quilts for her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Lorna also knitted various items throughout the year and donated them to the Salvation Army as she did not want those less fortunate to feel that no one cared. Her other hobbies included reading, playing bridge, crocheting, gardening and painting. Lorna loved to travel not only within Canada, but also to many other countries around the world. For many years, summers were spent at her well-loved cabin at Fishing Lake, often joined by family or very good friend, Betty Yuras. Lorna was predeceased by her husband Owen, brother Edsel and sister-in-law Colletta Darby, and brother-in-law Gordon Richardson. She is survived by her sister, Rosalyn Richardson, as well as children: Nancy, Edward (Gayle), Bruce (Kathy), and Wanda (Dwayne), seven grandchildren, and ten great grandchildren with one more on the way.
In her honor and in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada or The Canadian Cancer Society. Warren’s Funeral Home were entrusted with the arrangements.
