Lewis Merlin Smale
1933 – 2016
Lewis Smale passed away on Tuesday, December 20, 2016 at Sunnyside Adventist Care Centre, which has been his home for the past 14 months.
Lewis is survived by Ethel, his loving wife of 59 years; his children, Cathy (Rod), Craig (Margie), and Nancy; his grandchildren, Nicole, Katie, Rebecca, and Robin; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his grandson, Tyler Jon; his parents, Irene (Russ) Mather, and Merlin (Myrt) Smale; his sister, Fern (David) Lunney and brother, Brian Mather.
Lewis was born in Saskatoon and spent his early years in Wadena and Blucher. He moved to Saskatoon in the mid-40’s and attended school at Mayfair and Saskatoon Technical Collegiate. He joined the army in 1950 at the age of 17. He spent two years in Occupation Forces in Frankfurt Germany, and he counted that experience among the best years of his life. When he returned to Canada he went to Kitimat to join his father. On his return to Saskatoon he met and married Ethel Smith (Davidson) and they recently celebrated their 59th Anniversary. Lew worked as a Lab Technician at the University of Saskatchewan for 33 years. He was also a landlord and friend to many tenants over the years. He was very involved with the Saskatoon Ski Club and the Canoe Club. On more than one occasion he led canoeing expeditions of visiting American professors down the South Saskatchewan River where they thought our white sand was more beautiful than Florida’s. He liked “extreme” canoe trips down the rapids on the Churchill River. He also skied the Sask 60 multiple times. He was passionate about everything he did and made many friends along the way.
In retirement Lew enjoyed the achievements and activities of his grandchildren who were always on his mind.
The family is comforted by the fact that he is once again enjoying coffee and solving the world’s problems with our dear friend Phil Noonan.
The family wish to thank the staff at Sunnyside for their compassionate care during his stay there.
The Funeral Service will be held at Park Funeral Home, 311 Third Avenue North on Friday, December 23, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. Interment in Woodlawn Cemetery to follow.
