Obituary for Leslie Ernest Sumbler
SUMBLER, Leslie Ernest – Passed away, peacefully, on Wednesday, November 29, 2017 in his 84th year, after a courageous battle with dementia. Les was the beloved husband for 63 years of Irene (nee Veltri) Cherished father of Wayne Sumbler (Stella), Diana Burger (Rudolf) and Tim Sumbler (Sheryl). Loving grandfather of Ariana Whitman (Rodger), Dane Sumbler (Jing), Nathan Burger (Maddy), Haley Burger, Kolby Sumbler, Kalen Sumbler and great-grandfather of Kai Sumbler. Dear brother of Charles “Chuck” Sumbler (Lucie), Lillian Moody (late John), Bernard Sumbler (Irene), Richard Sumbler, Patsy Holiko (Peter), Barbara Sumbler and brother-in-law of Helen Pupo (Angelo), Yolanda Pellegrino (late Frank), Carol Guite (late Dwight), Shirley Veltri (late Orlie), Ruby Veltri (late Ronald) and the late Pat and Hattie Veltri. Sadly missed by many nieces, nephews and friends. Predeceased by his parents Leslie and Nellie Sumbler and by his brother Gerald.
Les was a talented tile setter by trade and worked for Star Tile, Audette Flooring and A1 Flooring. He took great pride in his work. He will be remembered as one of the best tile setters in the area. After 25 years in the industry, he went on to work for the City of Welland in the Parks and Cemeteries Division for 22 years, retiring in 1999. He was known and well respected among his peers for his hard work and impeccable attention to detail He could often be found with his dutch hoe and vertical edger’s meticulously tending to the rose gardens throughout our city parks.
Les also enjoyed working is his own garden and was an avid sports fan, having coached and served as Commissioner for Welland Minor Baseball/Tee ball. He was a dedicated fan of Toronto Maple Leafs and the Blue Jays.
Above all else, family was most important to Les. He deeply loved his wife, children and grandchildren and was immensely proud of them all. He leaves a legacy of what it means to live a life of kindness, integrity, hard work and family values. He will be forever missed by all of his family and friends.
Visitation will be held at the H.L. Cudney Funeral Home, 241 West Main Street, Welland on Friday, December 1st from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. Father Paul Vellakunnath will conduct a Funeral Service in the Cudney Chapel on Saturday, December 2nd at 11 a.m. followed by interment at Woodlawn Cemetery.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Dr. Sam Puvendran and Nurse Shirley Hawkey from the Geriatric Team in Niagara Falls, to Dr. Goswami and his staff and to the wonderful caregivers from the 6th Floor and the Palliative Care Unit at the Welland Hospital; your care and compassion will never be forgotten.
