Obituary for Leonard Frank Jarrett
JARRETT, LEONARD (LEN) FRANK It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Leonard Frank Jarrett on December 15, 2017. Beloved and devoted husband of (the late) Ursula Jarrett (née Downs). Loving stepfather of (the late) John Dempsey (Joanne), Hugh Jarrett (Brigitte), and Peter Jarrett (Anne). Adored Grandpere of Josh Dempsey (Melody), Vanessa Freeman (Mike), and Victoria Crumm (Matt); Rebecca and Nathan Jarrett, Gemma and Tom Watt. Great Grandad of Josh, Bronwyn, Ella, Ava, Oliver and Elliott. Len was born in 1921 in Croydon, England. His passion has always been, first and foremost, his family. He had an amazing zest for amateur (ham) radio (which he became interested in because of his experience with the Royal Signals in the Second World War), sailing, canoeing, and camping. Len also enjoyed downhill and cross country skiing, and reading. After the War Len obtained his qualifications as a Chartered Secretary, and in 1954 joined the Boy Scouts International Bureau in London, England, soon afterwards becoming their Director of Administration. The Bureau moved to Ottawa, Canada in 1958, and to Geneva, Switzerland in 1968 where it became the World Scout Bureau. During those 27 years, Len attended World Scout Jamborees and Scout Conferences in various countries. In 1981 Len decided to resign from the Bureau, and he and Ursula returned to live in Ottawa once again. In the years that ensued, Len continued to work as a consultant—a liaison between the World Scout Bureau, Scouts Canada, and the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) until he finally retired in 1986. For the 31 years following his retirement, he was surrounded by his family, and enjoyed every moment spent with them. Len gave selflessly in his volunteer work: as the world organizer of the Jamboree-on-the-Air/Jamboree-on-the-Internet (JOTA/JOTI), and as a member of Kiwanis in Oakville and Ottawa, Ontario. Len’s love, passion, and good nature profoundly touched the lives of many people, and he will be dearly missed by his family and friends.
A private memorial service will be held by the family at the Fonthill Cemetery.
