HURRELL, Laurence (Larry)
1932 – 2017
Laurence Douglas Hurrell (Larry) passed away peacefully on April 16, 2017 in Edmonton, Alberta, 9 days after his 85th birthday. Lewy Body Dementia made his last year difficult but in Dad’s fashion, he persevered and tried to not let it run his life.
He is lovingly remembered by his daughter Carolyn Joslin, son Jeffrey Hurrell, grandsons Connor and Dylan Joslin, his brother Robert (Bob) Hurrell, his brother-in-law Tommy Defeo, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife Barbara and his parents Leslie and Margaret Hurrell.
He was born and raised in Port Arthur, Ontario and it was there that he began his long and distinguished career with the CN Railway, where he also met his wife Barb. They were married for 48 years. In his career, Larry’s postings ranged from the Great Lake Region to the Pacific Ocean Region. Because of his many transfers, the Hurrell homes ranged from tiny towns like Sioux Lookout in Northern Ontario, The Pas in Manitoba, Melville in Saskatchewan, then into larger centers with Edmonton, Alberta as our final location. He made many close friends throughout his career and cherished those friendships. Larry always worked hard, was a commanding presence in any situation, and always gave just as much as he ever asked. He would be first in line if anyone needed a helping hand. A long-time member of Sherwood Park Fish and Game, he was an avid outdoorsman – Hunter, Golfer, Fisherman and Gardener as well as Woodworker. He was happy as long as was he was building something or puttering at one of his favourite hobbies.
In retirement, he was active in the CN Pensioners group and in Southminster-Steinhauer United Church where he continued to enjoy the support of his many friends.
He will be greatly missed by many.
There will be a Celebration of his life at the Southminster-Steinhauer United Church, 10740 – 19 Avenue, Edmonton, on Wednesday, April 26, 2017 at 2:00 p.m.. In lieu of flowers donations can be made in Larry’s name to Southminster-Steinhauer United Church supporting the Memorial Fund.
