It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Kenneth E. Johnston, husband of Shirley (Craig) Johnston which occurred on Tuesday, August 22, 2017 at Rocmaura Nursing Home. Born May 16, 1926 in Chatham, New Brunswick, growing up in Edmunston, New Brunswick he was the son of the late George H. and Margaret (Whitehouse) Johnston.
Ken always loved all things military. During WWII he was in the regular army. Following the war he joined the Reserve Army where he earned his commission, Lieutenant. However, his greatest dream was to become a pilot. In 1950, he enlisted in the RCAF and earned a commission of Flying Officer. After flight training he was chosen to become a helicopter pilot. He was stationed at Greenwood, NS and Chatham, NB where he participated in many search and rescue missions as well as mercy missions. That gave him the chance to fly many different aircrafts and travel quite a bit. These were the happiest days of his life and he told stories about the challenges and fulfillment of being a member of Canada’s Military Service.
He loved the 1940’s music, especially Glenn Miller and was known to dance at every opportunity.
In civilian life, Ken worked more than 30 years at CHSJ-TV, until his retirement. Ken had a long association with the Royal United Services Institute of New Brunswick, Royal Canadian Airforce Association (Saint John) 52 Wing. He was a founding member of Loyalist Day Committee and was a member of the Board of Trade.
He loved spending time with family. There were many wonderful camping vacations. Also Christmas and holidays were very important to Ken. He was always organizing Christmas Carolling and many fun activities for his children.
In addition to his loving wife Shirley, Kenneth is survived by his children; Kenneth C. (Ann) of Oakville, Ontario, Patty Johnston of Darlings Island, NB, Heather Greene (Lloyd) of Quispamsis, NB, Susan Johnston-LeBlanc (Thomas) of Saint John, NB and Laurie MacDonald (Alan) of Kitchener, Ont.
