Kathleen Fenik – 2017

FENIK, Kathleen “Kay” (nee Cross)
Kay was born in Toronto, the daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth (McCubbin) Cross who emigrated from Ireland and Scotland, respectively. She had a loving and happy childhood and spent every summer as a child in North Bay, Ontario, where her maternal grandparents, mother and uncles and aunts settled in the early 1900’s, after arriving from Scotland. Kay was taught to read at a very early age and thought being able to read was a magical gift that became a lifelong passion for her. She would rarely leave the house without something—anything—to read, but her preferred subject was history. Never could a newspaper be thrown out without a thorough perusal, even if there were weeks of them collected during an absence from home. Her amazing memory (wish it were not so, at times) was a perfect complement to her passion for reading. As a result, she became an engaging conversationalist with a magnetic attraction at social events.
Kay was a force to be reckoned with. She was supremely confident, but without a trace of arrogance (a characteristic that she relished shattering in anyone who displayed the trait); forthright, but always polite; a master of wit and repartee, with a drop of acid added, where called for, as she would not be put down by anyone, regardless of their station in life; determined, leaving no doubt that any goal she set would be achieved; decisive, but, of course, any decision requiring a modification was merely deemed an opportunity to exercise a woman’s prerogative to change her mind; honest, and if you were not, you had better be prepared to endure her wrath; charming, with a smile that was proven to be potent enough to get any man to do her bidding. Above all else, Kay was the ultimate lady, class personified, with impeccable style. She often said that after God made her, the mold was broken. She was indeed one of a kind.
Adversity had been no stranger to Kay, especially in her early adult years, but with her iron will, fierce independence of mind, and an incredible constitution, she succeeded, with unyielding courage and determination, in building a happy and fulfilling life for herself and her children. She was proud that she was able to raise her children to be responsible and productive members of society. As a devoted and loving wife of 48 years, she treasured each and every day of her marriage.
Kay passed peacefully at Billings Court Manor, Burlington on Monday, March 27, 2017. Beloved wife of Ralph Fenik, loving mother of Joseph Simpson (Judy), Catherine Burbage (Mike Bennett) and Elizabeth Brooks (David) and the late John and infant, James Simpson. Cherished grandmother of Joanne (Isaac), Jeffrey, Erin (James) and great grandmother of Ella, Zachary, Lennox, Clark and Gwen. Kay was predeceased by her brother James Cross.
Her formidable presence will forever be missed by all those whose lives she touched.
The family wishes to extend their sincere appreciation for the forthright guidance and excellent care provided by Dr. Matt Robinson and for the patience and compassion of the Aynsley Unit staff of Billings Court Manor. The family is grateful for Kay’s friends, Rohit and Rashmi Trivedi. Their numerous visits and generosity to Kay, while at Billings, is deeply appreciated. Janice Kent’s daily care of Kay for over three years provided immeasurable comfort and support to both Kay and her family.
Cremation has taken place. Celebration of Kay’s life will be held at SMITH’S FUNERAL HOME, 1167 Guelph Line, BURLINGTON, ON (905-632-3333), on Thursday, April 6 from 4-8pm.
Those wishing to make a donation in memory of Kay are asked to please consider the Juravinski Hospital and Cancer Centre Foundation, The Alzheimer’s Society of Ontario, or a charity of your choice.
