Katherine Elizabeth Nicholson – 1958-2017

Katherine Elizabeth Nicholson
1958-2017
Katherine Elizabeth Nicholson, passed away peacefully at the
age of 59 on Thursday, March 9, 2017 at the Moncton Hospital. Born in
New Glasgow, Nova Scotia, to the late Robert and Joyce (Taylor)
Nicholson.
Kate grew up a shy, tomboy of a girl in Lower Plymouth,
Pictou County, amongst a loving family, climbing trees and riding
horses. She was her mother’s magic and her
father’s gem; a loyal sister and a fierce friend. Kathy
blossomed, she married, and she had her beautiful heart’s
desire: her daughters.
This small town young lady then shifted gears and went on to
become a successful Moncton businesswoman in her own right. Her
post-secondary education in business at NBCC Moncton followed her
early education in Pictou County and, though having held positions in
the hospitality and customer service industries, this would not prove
to be where Katherine’s true talents would go on to be
focused. Her various employment positions within the New Brunswick
business management community, namely with Irving, prepared her to
spread her entrepreneurial wings, going on to become an accomplished
and well-respected business owner within the Moncton area for many
years.
To encapsulate the life of this truly remarkable woman in
words is to only offer a glimpse of her luster. Katherine was
inspirational and this spirit could be seen tangibly in her creations
of stained glass art or in her courage to live life on her terms
guided by an infallible moral compass. There was nothing about her
life that she did not love: travelling the beautiful, bountiful world,
the joy of a new experience, giving of herself in love and friendship.
Kathy was the guardian of wayward souls and to those who
were blessed to feel her mothering hand, the touch could not have been
given with more warmth and kindness. As her mother before her, to
Kathy’s children she was their compass, their North Star.
And to her grandchildren, Nana was the leader of their adventures, the
holder of their dreams. Hers was a life overflowing with laughter,
light and love, given and given and given again.
Katherine was predeceased by brother, Ronald, of Halifax,
Nova Scotia. She is survived by sister Barbara Clarke of New Glasgow,
Nova Scotia and brother Wayne Nicholson (Diane) of Halifax; daughters
Karen Whitewood and Korey Breen (B.J.) of Moncton, New Brunswick. Also
surviving are Nana’s grandchildren Brody, Brendan, Chloe,
Mitchel, Olivia and Jayden, as well as nieces, nephews, extended
family and friends in Pictou County, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and
elsewhere in Canada. Special mention must also be given to her most
special and lifelong friends Darlene Martin (Chris), Susan Harris
(Tom) and Wanda MacLellan (Allan).
Sincerest gratitude is extended to longtime primary care
physician, Dr. Thomas Laughlin and the compassionate nursing staff of
the Palliative Care Unit of the Moncton Hospital for the exceptional
and genuine care given to Katherine. Their kindness, professionalism
and exemplary service will always be warmly remembered and greatly
appreciated. The spiritual guidance of Rufus Onyewuchi and Trudy Rose
proved invaluable for Kathy’s peaceful transition and her
family’s collective heart is full with thanks for responding
to the call.
A Celebration of Katherine’s Life will take place
at a later date to be determined.
A donation in Kathy’s memory may be made to the
children’s charity, Plan International Canada or to The
Humanity Project.
Cremation has taken place under the professional care and
direction of Fergusons Funeral Home, 1657 Mountain Rd. Moncton
(858-1995).
