BAXTER, Karl William “Bill”, age 88, of Lawrencetown, Annapolis Co., NS, passed away peacefully on March 13, 2017, at home surrounded by his family. Born December 1, 1928, in Margaretville, NS, son of Walter and Doris (Early). Bill left home in 1946 to work at the Barite Mine in Walton, NS. After one year there he joined the staff of the Cornwallis Inn, Kentville, NS, prior to beginning what was to become a 35 year government service career. Bill served in the RCMP Marine Division, RCAF, Canadian Ice Reconnaissance Unit, and as a radio operator on marine and aeradio stations in Ontario, Arctic Quebec, Labrador, and Halifax. In 1974 he transferred to the Canadian Coast Guard and served as Radio Officer on CCGS Sir William Alexander and CCGS John A. Macdonald. In retirement, he enjoyed travel, carpentry, and refitting his sailboat The Periwinkle. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by brothers Thomas and George. He is survived by his sister Kathryn Durling, wife Barbara (Wilson), daughter Lorie and son Blaise (Leslie) as well as four grandchildren and five great grandsons.
