Judy Dawn Thomas

Judy moved to Salt Spring Island with her husband Paul in 2010. This was somewhat of a surprise and concern to their three children, although their son Paul also moved to the island. What an isolated place this would be for them! Little did they know that it was an excellent choice. The island community became another family.
Judy, Mum, Nanna thrived in this small community that became her home. Judy volunteered for a number of different groups, Thrifty’s Sendial, Garden Club, Brinkworthy Emergency Committee, Senior’s Centre among others.
When Judy and Paul were at their home at Brinkworthy, it was likely that you could find Judy tending their garden. Her grandkids used to laugh when the melon fruit was growing. They flourished when settled into Nannas old bras! Nanna was their
Mum voted to protect the ALR land behind Brinkworthy from being developed into playing fields. I think the residents agree that the field of trees along with the local wildlife are more at home here than a ball park.
Nana’s 4 grandchildren loved to visit Salt Spring Island, especially during the St. Mary’s Lake RV Park Pirate weekend held annually on the August BC Day long weekend. Here, she would watch her family make the most of the time they spent together, and was more like Christmas than any other time. Visits to Vesuvius Bay to swim and a run down to the Salt Spring Cheese Factory, or sitting around the fire roasting marshmallows and making smores for all the kids were major highlights.
Not enough can be said for the SSI family that surrounded Judy. Between the full time residents at Brinkworthy and the seasonal and full time residents of the St. Mary’s Lake RV Park, she was never short of friends and love. Her family is extra thankful for these connections and they extend to Paul and Paul Junior. Knowing that they are in good hands makes our hearts ache a little less.
Nothing can replace what has been taken away, but Judy’s memory will live on in the hearts of the many loved ones surrounding her. We are thankful for this every day.
Judy was born in Edmonton Alberta on October 17 1954. She is pre-deceased by her parents Howard and Margaret. She leaves behind her sister Jill, her husband Paul, her children Sarah (David), Paul, Terra (Cliff) and grandchildren, Acacia, Austin, Thea and Maria.
She had a passion for animals gardening and her family. Her beautiful smile could melt anyones heart. In her youth she was an adventurer who travelled to Hawaii and backpacked across Europe. She has lived in Edmonton, Victoria, Calgary, East Sooke, Crofton and Salt Spring Island.
Judy , Mum, Nanna’s memory will live on in our hearts and always be cherished.
