Josephine Josie Avery-Gagne

Josephine Josie Avery-Gagne April 6, 2017

It is with very heavy hearts we announce the passing of a dear Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother and Aunt.
Age 94, she was born in Halifax to the late Gertrude and Danito Fetinko.
Josie lived all her life in Halifax until she and her husband Joe Avery bought their home in Spryfield. After the births of Dan and Pat she then became very involved with the Home and School Association as well as the Children of Mary at St Michael’s Parish.
Upon the death of her first husband Joe, she worked in the housekeeping department at Camphill Hospital, ensuring that her two boys got their education. Seeing them both become Chartered Accountants was a very proud moment for her.
A dedicated Mother to her two sons, she embodied all that a wonderful Mother should be. As well as being a wonderful Mother she was also a much loved Mother-in-law to her two daughters-in-law Gail and Beth. Mom loved to travel and along with Dan, Gail and family she was able to go to Florida for many years and then on to Europe where she became the most loved traveler on our tour.
She is survived by her sons Dan (Gail) and Pat (Beth); Grandchildren, Tricia, Chad (Anique), Joe (Jamie) , Rob (Laura) and Michelle (Ian); Great grandchildren, Katie, Declan, Felix, Vivienne, Ellie, Maren and Leo; Brother-in-law David (Edna) Avery; nieces Diane (Frankie) Cowie, Sharon (Guy) Munroe; nephews Gary (Theresa), Johnny (Stephanie), Dale and David Fetinko, David Avery and Robert Jewsbury; Stepsons Rene, George (Ann) and Peter (Patty) Gagne.
She was predeceased by her first husband Joe Avery and second husband Paul Gagne; her brothers Danny, Johnny, Pat, Tommy; sister Rita; stepson David Gagne.
A very special thank you to the staff at Oakwood Terrace. The love and concern that you showed during Mom’s stay was very much appreciated by her family. You always treated Mom like she was a member of your own family. We were so pleased that Mom enjoyed her final years in such a caring place. For someone who at first didn’t really didn’t want to give up her independence it was wonderful for us to hear from her how much she loved Oakwood and how she wasn’t lonely any more. While at Oakwood Mom was able to develop many friendships not only with other residents but also their families. These families have come to mean so much to us during the last year.
Special thanks to Pearl, Shirley, Gladys, Edna, Norm and Bill. Meeting with each other during our daily visits to our loved ones meant the world to us and enabled each of us to get through some difficult times.
Cremation has taken place, visitation will take place Monday April 10 at Cole Harbour Funeral Home, 1234 Cole Harbour Rd from 2-4 and 6-8 pm. Funeral Mass will be held Tuesday at 10:00am at St John XXIII Church, 35 Colby Drive, Dartmouth.
Interment will take place at a later date in Gate of Heaven Cemetery. Family flowers only. Donations can be made to your charity of choice.
