Obituary for Joseph “Joe” Payonk
Joe Payonk of Medicine Hat, formerly of Winnipeg, MB, passed away peacefully with his daughter, Wendy, by his side on Thursday, December 7th, 2017, at the age of 86 years. Joe was predeceased by his beloved wife, Mary; his parents, Anton and Mary; his brother, Charlie; and his sisters, Victoria and Grace. Joe leaves behind to cherish his memory two daughters, Debbie (Mario) Archambault of Kingston, Ontario, and Wendy (Paul) Klassen of Jenner; his grandchildren, Jake (Robyn) Klassen, Katie (Colter) Harden, and James Klassen; his great-grandson, Dallas Klassen; his brothers, Frank (Bernice) and Wally (Del); and his sister, Doreen Louise (Josef). Joe was born in Libau, Manitoba, and moved to Winnipeg with his family in 1943. During his teen years, Joe joined the Army Cadets and spent time in CFB Shilo, Manitoba. He entered the trades as an electrician apprenticing at Gamble Electric. In his early career, Joe spent a winter working for Cumin Shipment at a naval radar base in Churchill, Manitoba and later joined City Hydro and then Stewart Electric. He also worked for a time at Tennenhouse Electric. Joe worked as an electrician on diesel engines at CNR in Winnipeg for 27 years until retirement. In 1951, Joe married Mary and they lived in Winnipeg for a few years, then in Narol, St. Clements for over 24 years where they raised their daughters. In 1978, Joe and his family moved back to Winnipeg. During his working and retirement years, Joe was an avid gardener. In 2001, he and Mary moved to Medicine Hat where Joe liked to keep busy with many projects, working around Wendy and Paul’s ranch, and helping the grandkids with some of their school projects. Joe and Mary were Jake, Katie and James’ biggest fans at rodeos, hockey, barrel racing, and any other school activities. Grandpa Joe loved to fix things and little fingers joined right along. Over the years, Grandpa Joe was a role model and his youngest grandson, James, followed in his footsteps making Joe so proud to have another electrician in the family. Some of Joe’s biggest smiles were when he was with his great-grandson, Dallas, who called him “Gigi Joe” and pushed his wheelchair saying “Vroom Vroom”. Joe also enjoyed taking the train to visit his daughter, Debbie and Mario, in Kingston. They made lots of trips in the area and Joe loved the history there. We will miss his opinion on world affairs and particularly his witty comments. Anybody who knew Joe, knew his pride and joy were his tools and his garden hoe…his garden grew and grew. This really showed Joe’s love and passion for life! May you rest in peace now, Joe.
