John Nicholas Oleksyn
August 23, 1924 – March 23, 2017
John Nicholas Oleksyn was born August 23, 1924 on the family farm near Lefnard, Sask. to parents, Nicholas and Helen Oleksyn (Kalnuik). John passed away on March 23, 2017 at the age of 92 at the Herb Bassett Home in Prince Albert. He attended St. Bertha’s School until grade eight. He worked in a logging camp in Love, as a baker in P.A., then in a coal mine at East Coulee and Drumheller and he did some farming as well. In the late 1950’s he worked for the CNR out of Calgary and Kamloops for three years, then began to grain and cattle farm with his brother, Bill, back home between Wakaw and Cudworth. In 1975 he and his brother, Bill, began working at the Credit Union in Prince Albert where he met and married Ada Kaufhold. He retired in 1989. John and Ada enjoyed travelling and all of their grandkids’ activities. They loved having meals at Smitty’s Restaurant in Prince Albert. He will be remembered for his sense of humour and the many stories he loved to share. John is survived by his step-children, Joanne Kaufhold (Alan), Linda Vandale (Gerald), Robert Kaufhold (Eleanor), Tim Kaufhold and Mark (Marnie) Kaufhold, eleven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, his sister, Ann Chalmers and brother Alex (Joyce) Oleksyn. He was predeceased by parents, his wife, Ada, brother, Bill (Marie), sisters, Mary (Al) Sangster, and Emily Oleksyn and great grandaughter, Shauna Martin. A funeral service will be held at MacKenzie Funeral Chapel on Wednesday, March 29 at 1:00 p.m. A coffee time will be held at Smitty’s banquet room following the burial.
