John Francis MacDonald – 2017

John Francis MacDonald 1941 – 2017
Sydney Mines
It is with heart-felt sympathy that we note the passing of our father, grandfather, brother, nephew, uncle, cousin and friend on September 3, 2017.
John Francis MacDonald was born on Atlantic Street (Iron City), Sydney Mines, NS, May 6, 1941; the son of the late Bob and Mae (Sadie Mae Jobes) MacDonald.
John lived most of his life in Sydney Mines. As a young man, he was quick- fisted, enjoyed boxing and was employed with the Number 1 Princess Colliery.
Like many, of his time, he ventured down the road finding employment in Ontario with the Seafarers International Union.
When his days of Great Lake sailing were over, he maintained Cape Breton as his home, where he was briefly employed as a Commercial fisherman out of Bay St. Lawrence and with the Labourer’s International Union.
He spent many years enjoying his life in Bay St. Lawrence and in Scotch Lake and was never afraid to live off the grid. Both locations brought him closer to his family roots along with the opportunity to attend many family reunions and gatherings (MacEachern reunions, Mabou). Genealogy was important to him, noted by his lore and his wealth of knowledge about his Celtic Roots and extended family, cousins really meant something to him.
Music was an intricate part of his life. He was a great entertainer, he played harmonica, guitar, raised his voice in song and was also known to cut a rug (step dance).
A friend to all, a man of character, who enjoyed a game of chance, making others smile, and engaging in conversation. A true mountain man; larger than life.
He is survived by his children and grandchildren; John (Chelsey), Theresa (Julian, Grace), Susan (Suzanne, Francesca) and Fraser & wife Cindy (Dakota).
He is also survived by his many siblings, Robert (Mia), Marjorie (Leo), Janie, Walter (Lynn), Alounda, Daniel (Marjorie), Angela (James), Peter (Colleen), Gerard, Mary (Larry), Donald (Shirley), Alan (Nancy), Paul (Frances), Michael (Theresa).
He leaves to mourn his Aunts and Uncles; Andrew & Mary MacDonald, Alan Joseph & Mary MacKinnon, John Dan Jobes and many nieces and nephews, cousins and close friends.
The family would like to acknowledge Kelley Mills for the friendship and support she showed John over the years and during his illness; her love and support was greatly appreciated.
John was predeceased by his grandparents; Francis & Madge MacDonald, Peter & Elizabeth MacKinnon, Sarah Jane Jobes-MacKinnon. parents, Robert & Mae MacDonald, sister, Nora MacDonald. brother-in-law, Thomas Finlayson, nieces, Corinna Jessome, Leah MacKinnon-MacInnis, nephews, Nicholas Withers, Zach MacDonald and the mother of his children, Theresa (Fraser) MacDonald.
