Johanna (Joan) Hancock nee Miller was born in Prospect, Clarendon, Jamaica February 1932.
Joan was accepted at the Stockport Hospital for training to become a nurse. She went to Stockport, Cheshire, England in March 1956. Joan completed the training program and became a State Registered Nurse (SRN) in December 1959.
Joan continued her nursing training in other hospitals and became a State Registered Midwife (SCM) in June 1961.
Neville Hancock was sent by St. Kitts Government to Stockport Cheshire, England in September 1956 for training and studies in Mechanical Engineering. Joan and Neville met for the first time in August 1957 as students in Stockport.
On 5th August, 1961, Joan and Neville Hancock got married.
Joan went to St. Kitts in September 1961 with her husband Neville. During her time in St. Kitt, Joan was employed as a nurse at the St. Kitts General Hospital.
In 1968 Joan and her husband Neville went to Brighton Sussex, England to pursue further studies.
During their time in Brighton, Joan obtained the Certificate of District Nursing in May of 1969; The Royal College of Nurses Certificate in Nursing Administration (Hospital) in September 1971 and a Family Planning Association Certificate in July 1972. Joan returned to St. Kitts with her husband in 1972 and she resumed work at the General Hospital in St. Kitts. While in St. Kitts, Joan formed and ran a voluntary service known as The Woman’s Voluntary Service St. Kitts from 1972-1976. They raised funds and provided food and help to those in need. Joan applied for and obtained a nursing position at the University of Alberta Hospital. Joan and her husband came to Edmonton, Alberta in February 1977.
Joan worked at the University Hospital as a Nursing Supervisor for many years. Joan continued her studies and obtained the degree of B.Sc. of Administration (Health Services) May 1984 and Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Administration (concentration in Health Services) in December 1989 from Central Michigan University.
Joan lectured to students at the University of Alberta who were in the then B. Sc. Nursing Program. Joan developed and ran a Health Care Service Company registered under the name of Dynamic Quality Health Care Group Ltd. and was the Managing Director.
Joan took early retirement from the University of Alberta Hospital to run her company. In 2008, Joan closed down the company and went into retirement. Joan died in Edmonton on the 6th May, 2017.
A Visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., on Thursday, May 25, 2017 at Connelly-McKinley Funeral Home, 10011-114 Street, Edmonton. A Funeral Service will be held at 1:00 p.m., on Friday, May 26, 2017 at the same location. Interment to follow in Westlawn Memorial Gardens.
