Obituary Overview
Joe & Onie Petreny
It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our father Joseph Frank Petreny at the age of 89 in Guelph, Ontario. Joe was predeceased by his wife Onie (Iris Iona Sadlemyer) the love of his life for 63 years in 2012 and his son Joe in 2016 after his long, courageously fought battle with cancer. Loving remembered by sons: Neil (Kate), the late Joe (Lorelei), Gale (Tanis) and daughter Cheryl (Brian). And treasured and loved grandchildren: Brent, Michel, Bryony, Brooke, Maya, Lauren, Erin and Emily. Joe is also survived by his sister Ida Larsen (late Harvey) and their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Joe grew up in Cupar, SK and Onie grew up in Mazenod, SK. They each became teachers and their paths crossed in the summer of 1948 while they were both attending summer school at the University of Saskatchewan. Onie said it was “love at first sight and she was going to marry him” when she saw Joe. And, they were married, on April 23, 1949 in Moose Jaw, SK. After they were married they taught together in a rural one room school house. Eventually they moved to Regina where Joe taught at Balfour Collegiate and Onie stayed home to raise their three sons who were all born in Regina. Joe later went on to obtain his Masters degree from the University of Oregon where their daughter was born. In 1968 Joe left the classroom and accepted a position with the Saskatchewan Teacher’s Federation (STF) in Saskatoon where he worked until he retired in 1983. Onie continued being a full-time mother, chef, coach and cheer leader and chauffer as she shuttled the kids to swimming, football, hockey, karate, piano, dance, skating. Onie obtained her real estate licence and returned to teaching as the family got older. In 1973 Joe and Onie purchased Irontree Farms where they shared their love for gardening, horses, cows, chickens. The grandchildren loved the farm too and spent many summers helping and eating in the garden, hot dog roasts, golfing, quading through the fields and learning how to push a garden hose in the ground so far that it would never come out – ever!
Family was everything to Joe and Onie and their love for their children and grandchildren was deep and completely unconditional. Laughter and love always was abundant in their lives and in their home. Onie shared her love of baking with the grandchildren and Joe shared his passion for woodworking with them in his workshop.
Onie bravely battled Alzheimer’s for several years while Joe cared for her in the family home before she passed in 2012. Joe moved to Ontario in 2015 to be closer to family after he was diagnosed with vascular dementia. He enjoyed all the family celebrations and visits from all his children and grandchildren who came to visit him. Go Green!
A private family burial will take place in Saskatoon.
