JANE LOUISA AUSTEN
27 November 1957 — 26 December 2017
Surrounded by love, Jane Louisa Austen of Victoria Beach, MB peacefully departed this life following a brief but valiant fight against cancer.
Jane was born in Thunder Bay, ON to James and Irene Austen (née Beaney) and spent her childhood in the village of Cuxton, Medway, Kent, England. The family immigrated to Canada in the 1970s, eventually settling at Victoria Beach, Manitoba. Following graduation from high school, Jane studied at University of Winnipeg, and obtained two certificates from Red River College. She then embarked on a career with Manitoba Telephone System in Winnipeg and later Selkirk until taking early retirement. For several years she sang in the choir at St. John’s Anglican Cathedral, Winnipeg.
Jane was predeceased by her parents, and brothers Graham, Robert, Gerald and sister-in-law Eileen Austen (née Ateah). She is survived by family in Canada and England, including Eileen’s nephew Kevin and his wife Sandra Ateah of Victoria Beach; cousins Christopher and Jenny Beaney, and Ian and Claire Bonneywell of Rochester, Kent, England and their families; numerous nieces and nephews, and the joy of her life, Pearl the cat.
Jane was the consummate host. Friends would quip that she could cater dinner for a dozen on a moment’s notice. Her scones are legendary, along with annual fruitcakes and other goodies. She treated many to classic British fare such as egg ‘n chip, bubble n’ squeak and treacle sponge. Jane loved British dramas and comedies. PBS Sunday evenings were TV gold. Her love of teddy bears reached its pinnacle with Ewoks in Star Wars Ep. VI. Many fine day trips and long weekends were spent by friends and family at The Manor, as her country residence came to be called.
Memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 4, 2018 at St. Michael’s Church, Victoria Beach, with reception to follow at the Seniors Scene, and private interment in summer 2018.
Deepest thanks to Dr. Shaundra Popowich of HSC Women’s Hospital, and the staff of Women’s Hospital and Riverview Hospital Palliative Care for their attention, kindness and compassion to Jane. Also thanks to the home care nurses for their attention to Jane in recent years. Special thanks to Brenda Coke and Laura Flewin-Hilton for keeping loving vigil over Jane during her final days.
In lieu of flowers, donations to CancerCare Manitoba, Winnipeg Harvest or East Beaches Animal Shelter Inc. (Victoria Beach) would be welcomed.
There’s still time to send flowers to the Celebration of Life at 11:00 AM on January 4, 2018.
