Obituary for James Lloyd Gaffney
GAFFNEY, James Lloyd March 1, 1936 – Kronau, Saskatchewan December 3, 2016 – Calgary, Alberta
James passed away peacefully on December 3, 2016 with his loving family by his side. He will be sadly missed by Donna, his wife of 54 years, and his children Monique Flynn (James), Chris (Tracy), and his grandchildren Rhiannon and Cecilia, Angus, Adelia, Declan and Cate. He will be fondly remembered by his sister Eleanor Mann (Martin), sisters-in-law Charlotte Gaffney and Rae Pawlowski, brother-in-law Ken Westby, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Undeniably Jim was loved and admired by his circle of family and friends. Jim attended High School at Campion College in Regina, and excelled in the Royal Canadian Air Cadets. He earned a degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Texas and returned to Canada to work in the oil industry. After marrying Donna in 1962, Jim found he was spending too much time away in the oil fields and left engineering to earn a law degree at the University of British Columbia. After moving to Calgary, Jim began his career as a lawyer at Hudson’s Bay Oil and Gas. It was there he became a respected international energy lawyer and traveled the world. Later he worked for Amoco Canada as General Counsel. He retired in 1992, but remained active with contract work. He also enjoyed his favorite hobbies: painting, woodturning, and golf. He and Donna frequently traveled to Texas and abroad. Above all, his family and friends were the most important. After his onset of COPD he was unable continue with many of his physical activities. Undeterred, he became an avid researcher, writer, and advisor. Despite his progressing illness, Jim managed to retain his faith and sense of humour. He continued to feed his keen appetite for knowledge by keeping up on world events, technology, and his grandchildren’s pursuits. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Luke’s Catholic Church (corner of Northmount Drive and Northland Drive NW) on Monday, December 12, 2016 at 12:00 pm. Private Family Graveside service to follow at Queen’s Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Alberta Lung Association( www.ab.lung.ca/donate).
