Death Notice
Only two short months after losing his wife, James (Jim) Nield of Sarnia, passed away peacefully, with his slicked-back hair, surrounded by family, on the evening of Saturday, November 18, 2017, at the age of 87. Originally from Birmingham, England, Jim was born on April 16, 1930, and is the son of the late Percy and Gwenie Nield.
Jim is the loving husband of the late Hazel Nield. Cherished father of Terry (Suzie), Rob (Jo Anne), Steve (Wendy), and Christine. Beloved grandad to Cheryl (Jeff), Brad (Kristen), Melissa, Bruce, Justin, Lindsay, Blair, Jonathan, Mathew, Jenna, Jason (Melissa), and Shawn (Eve). Treasured great-grandad of Logan, Addyson, Jace, and Maddy. He is survived by his sister June Robertson and predeceased by his sister Doreen Turner.
Jim had been on quite the journey battling dementia over the last couple of years, but most recently was on a wonderful ride the past few weeks recalling many memories with the family. The family finds comfort in the coincidence that Jim passed away the same day as his mother, Gwenie, back in 1993. We’re certain both Gwenie and Hazel were awaiting him that day with open arms.
Jim will be remembered as the family bartender on Hollands Ave., with his Elvis hair, teaching the youngsters how to play darts, and to keep away from his drum set. Weekend memories at the Ponderosa will be cherished by the grandkids, and all of his models will be idolized by the great-grandkids. Similar to Hazel’s blue eye-shadow, Jim had copious amounts of aviator sunglasses, no matter the occasion, the tint was always dark. Many will remember Jim from his Friday night sharp-shooting in the dart league at the Legion, where he was a member for 57 years, and on any given Saturday you’d find him right back there banging out some tunes on his drums.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Dr. Gannon, and the attention and love from the charge nurse, Toni, at Vision Nursing Home, along with her caring team. We appreciate everything you have done for our family.
Cremation has taken place. A Legion Service will take place on Thursday, November 23, 2017, at SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 1576 London Line, Sarnia at 6:30 p.m. Family and friends are welcome. A private interment will be held for immediate family on Friday. As an expression of sympathy, donations can be made to the Alzheimer Society of Sarnia-Lambton.
