He began his territorial army military service in 1958 as an infantryman, University of Aberdeen Officers Training Corp. Upon discharge in 1964 he had achieved the rank of Pipe Major seconded to the 5th Batallian Gordon Highlanders. His time at Tory Research steered his path towards food processing development in the fish industry. He learned to play the bagpipes at eleven years old, being taught by retired military musicians who recognized his talents and encouraged his musical development. Jim had a strong belief in the ripple effect of paying a good deed forward. The mentor support he received lead him to be the mentor for many piping students. He loved to see the passion for music in the young.
Jim lived his life to the fullest. He lived for his family and his life was his family. He was an eternal optimist and despite his failing health accepted, managed, adjusted and continued on doing all the things he loved to do with his family and friends.
