Obituary for James “Jim” Carney Ferster
A Good Man has Quietly Sailed Away…Recalled to Duty for the Eternal Voyage. James Carney Ferster, of Calgary, died on March 6, 2017, at Foothills Hospital in the company of his caring family at the age of 96 years. Jim was born in Dowling Lake, Alberta to Ray and Annis Ferster, on March 5, 1921. Raised in Calgary, he was accepted into the Royal Canadian Navy Volunteer Reserve on April 5, 1940 and served on seven different navy ships,” for the term of hostilities only” which included 1445 duty days on the high seas. A model of the HMCS Calgary built in 1994 by Jim and donated to the Naval Museum of Alberta is on display at Calgary City Hall. Jim was a quiet man of great intelligence, meticulous, and with a great dry sense of humour. He loved nature, birds and animals… especially his dogs…flowers and gardening. Jim adored his wife Peggy and was predeceased by her in 2008, and by his beloved first born grandson, Micheal Norman Smith, R.N. in 2014. He is lovingly remembered by his four children, Dianna (Gerald), Jim Jr. (Chris), Nancy-Lou (Carl), Terry (Ruth), his grandchildren; Patrick, Dana, Juliann, Susan, Graham, Dani, Esther, Emma, Paul, Luke, and fifteen great grandchildren. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Corpus Christi Catholic Church (404 Northmount Place NW) on Monday, March 13, 2017, with Tributes starting at 10:00 am and the Mass at 10:30 am, with the Rev. Raul Ranola, Presider.
