It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of James Douglas “Huggie” Huggard on December 26, 2017 at home with his loving wife by his side. He was born in Saint John, NB on January 3, 1942 to the late Walter and Isabelle (McKenna) Huggard and was the loving husband to his wife and best friend, Barbara (Steele) Huggard.
Huggie was a fun loving and funny kind of guy. He was easy going and easy to get along with. He was a prankster who loved playing jokes on people. He began his career in construction, working at Saint John Shipbuilding and then he went into bartending. He worked in many establishments over the years, and was very well known for his work at the 3Mile, Huggie and Barbs Den, the Outback and the Trap where everyone considered him to be the entertainment committee. Huggie was an avid hunter and fisherman, travelling to hunting lodges all over Canada. He loved being in nature and four wheeling and was a former member of Fog City Four Wheelers. He was the life of the party, and known all over for his love of the diceboard. Taken far too soon, he will be sadly missed by all who knew him.
Huggie is survived by his adored daughters; Kim Huggard, Sandy (Rob) Murphy, Patty (Tom) Corrier, Tammy (Mike) Chiasson, Tracey (Dan) Cyr, Kim “Legs” Scichilone and Krista (Ryan) Boyce, 17 grandchildren; Josh, Ashley, Nick, Ryan, Merina, Zachary, Brooke, Katie, Shyla, Daniel, Marcus, Joey, Madison, Devon, Jynessa, Brooklynn and Ryan, great grandson Jaxson, sister Judy Huggard, niece Christine Kyle, nephew Mark Silliphant , great nieces Tiffany, Casey and Haley cousin and friend Doug Trecartin, former spouse Peggy Huggard and his wonderful dog Pepper.
In addition to his parents he was predeceased by his brother-in-law Wayne Silliphant, aunt and uncle Frances and Robert Wong, and special friend Dave Giles.
Huggie’s family would like to extend their thanks to St. Martin’s Ambulance, Dr. Le, Extra Mural Nurses Ruth and Muriel, and the nursing staff of the third and fourth floors of the Saint John Regional Hospital for their care and compassion provided to Huggie during his illness. And a special thank you to Dana, Troy and Glenna for all your kindness and assistance and friendship provided during Huggie’s last living days.
Arrangements are entrusted to Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road (646-2424). In keeping with his wishes, there will be no visitation held. A Celebration of Huggie’s Life will be held at Chuckles Bar on January 3, 2017 at 3pm. Memorial donations in Huggie’s memory made to A Living Memorial or to the charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated by his family.
