JACOB (JACK) JACOBSON
April 20, 1929 – June 18, 2017
It is with great sadness that we announce that Jack Jacobson has passed away peacefully after a brief illness, at Gimli Hospital, at the age of 88.
He was predeceased by his wife Mildred, parents Thorunn and Jacob, brothers Lenard and Gusti, sisters Margaret and Dora. Jack is survived by his children; David (Marlis) and Leslie along with grandchildren Natasha, Kristjan, Stefan and Bonny. He is also survived by his sister Eveline (Jack) and brother Wilbur.
Jack was born in Gimli on April 20, 1929, the third son of a fisherman. His father owned and operated fishing stations around the north basin of Lake Winnipeg. At the tender age of seven, Jack stowed away with the anchors in the bow of his father’s boat and didn’t make himself known until they had arrived at the northern fishing camp. He was allowed to stay for a couple of weeks before being sent back to school. Undeterred, he started his 60-year career on the lake at the age of fourteen. After his retirement, he loved to retell his adventures to his grandchildren.
Between seasons, after the equipment was repaired and put away, he would follow his other passions: trapping and hunting. He loved to outsmart a mink or bring home a large moose.
He married the love of his life, Mildred in Gimli in 1952, and she became his partner in the fishing business and shared in his adventures for over 50 years.
At Dad’s request, no formal Funeral Service will take place. A private family gathering will be held a later date.
The family would like to thank the staff at Gimli Hospital for their wonderful care and devotion to making Dad comfortable in his final days.
