Death Notice
CAMPBELL, Isobel Annetta, nee Brown – 1938 – 2017 – Isobel grew up in Elgin County, first on the farm and then, after the age of nine, in the house in Shedden, Ontario. The middle child in a family of five children, she developed a strong interest in athletics that lasted into adulthood. As a child she attended the one room “Brown” school in the country and then the two room school in Shedden. In high school, she went to the now-demolished St. Thomas Collegiate Institute. During her school years she studied piano and completed her Grade 9 piano certification. After grade 13 at S.T.C.I., she enrolled in the University of Western Ontario and spent two years in residence at Spencer Hall. It was there she met Bob on a blind date! While at Western, she participated in the racing and synchronized swimming program. She was also a member of the Gamma Phi Beta Sorority. It was during her years at Western that she acquired the nick-name “Liz” which persisted with her in-laws and some of her friends. During her working years she taught at both secondary and college level and finished her career teaching in the adult education program at Wheable Secondary School. Isobel has served as an elder at Metropolitan United Church in London and participated in a variety of church activities. She was a long-time member of the London Curling Club and has competed in bonspiels up to the level of provincial qualifiers. She was an enthusiastic skier and also served as a keen crew member, both racing and cruising, on the family sailboat. Around 1999, Isobel was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. After a lengthy progression and increasing severity of symptoms, she underwent surgery to implant a deep brain stimulator device. She continued to deal with the disease progression at home as long as was possible. The summer presented some growing challenges, but was marked by good days at the cottage and precious time with family and friends. Just over one week ago, she was admitted to University Hospital. There she received the kindest of care and passed away peacefully on September 16. She is predeceased by her parents Stewart and Jean and her older brother, Stewart C. Brown, of Elgin County. She is lovingly remembered by Robert (Bob), her husband of over fifty-six years, her children Barbara and Geoffrey (Leilane), as well as sisters Mary Jean Hanbury and Carolyn Mendham and brother Duncan (Lois). She is fondly remembered by grandchildren Jonathan, Leisal, Kirstine, Evan and Isobella as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. Visitation on Friday, September 29 from 7-9 p.m. at Harris Funeral Home, 220 St. James St. at Richmond. The memorial service will be conducted at Metropolitan United Church, 468 Wellington St. at Dufferin on Saturday, September 30 at 1 p.m. with visiting from 12 noon – 1 p.m. Those wishing to make a memorial donation are asked to consider the Parkinson’s Society of Southwestern Ontario.
