George Ellwood Hunter (better known as Al Hunter, The Cabinet Man), 79, of Owen Sound, Ontario, passed away on Monday, December, 25th, 2017, at Chapman House residential hospice in Owen Sound.
Son of the late Erskine Hunter and Rosie (Wall) Brown. Al is survived by his wife of 57 years, Marjorie Hunter (nee Robertson) of Owen Sound; his daughters Sharon of Owen Sound, Sandy (See) and her husband John, of Holland Centre, Wendy (Jansen), of Owen Sound; son Willard and his wife Kathy Jo, of Kitchener; grandchildren Mathew (Hunter), Jonathan, Jeremy, Marissa, Andrew, Misti, and Savannah; and great grandchild Kennedy Anne. He is also survived by his sisters, Olive Bryanton of Prince Edward Island, and Velma Owen, of New Brunswick. Predeceased by his brother Preston Hunter, of P.E.I., and granddaughter Melissa.
Born in Princeton, P.E.I., Al spent much of his younger life in Gagetown, New Brunswick, before moving to Hamilton, Ontario, where he attended the Ford of Canada Trade School for 4 years before marrying in 1960. He and his young wife Marjorie (Mardy) Hunter (nee Robertson) then moved to Oakville, Ontario, to start a family, and then it was off to Barrie, Ontario, where he worked in quality control at General Electric. Al also served as an auxiliary police officer for several years while in Barrie. His next adventure would bring him back to his sweetheart’s birthplace of Owen Sound where he and Mardy formed The Cabinet Man and Countertops Unlimited.
Al enjoyed curling, golfing, and was a member of the Grey County Horseshoe Club. He was also an avid country music fan and was known for playing the spoons at gatherings. He loved relaxing and watching the many birds and chipmunks that visited their property, and he had a soft heart for furry creatures, very rarely being without a cat in his life.
Special thanks to Chapman House residential hospice in Owen Sound for their excellent care and support.
Memorial donations can be made to Chapman House, the Heart and Stroke Association, or the charity of your choice.
