HOLLAND Ruth – August 22, 1909 – April 6, 2017

It is with profound sadness that we announce that on April 6, 2017, our dear mother and grandmother, Ruth Holland of Leduc, passed away peacefully at the age of 107 years.
Ruth was born on August 22, 1909 in Bruderheim, AB to Gustav and Wilhelmina Domreis. She was the second of 4 sisters, Herta, Selma and Lil. The family moved to Portland, Oregon for 4 years, but then returned to a farm in the Leduc area. In 1927 she married Robert Holland of Leduc and they had 7 children. They farmed in the Leduc area until 1955 when they moved to Calgary. After Bob’s passing in 1976, Ruth returned to Leduc to be near her sisters and parents.
Ruth enjoyed going on numerous trips to visit her children and grandchildren in Canada and the U.S. and she also travelled to Hawaii, Bahamas, Europe and Great Britain. She drove until she was 97, and when she gave up driving, she lamented that it was like losing her best friend. Ruth enjoyed a lifetime of good health and took no medication, even at the end. Ruth was content and practical, spirited and fun-loving, strong and independent, and she set a tremendous example to her children and grandchildren, teaching by example, the value of family. Ruth attended church at First Baptist Church (Fredricksheim).
Ruth is survived by her daughter Lois (Dennis) Copeland; son-in-law Mervyn McIntosh; daughter-in-law Donna Holland; grandchildren Cyril (Darlene) Maskoske, Susan (Jim) Kritzler, Sherri Richmond, Bradley (Donna) Holland, Craig (Diane) Holland, Bill Holland, Robert (Lynn) Copeland, Richard (Cathy) Copeland, Beverly (Charles) Pester, Tom (Sandra) Copeland, Duncan (Michelle) McIntosh and Sandra (Ross) McIntosh; as well as 50 great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Robert Holland; children Doris (Eddie) Maskoske, Donald Holland, Duncan Holland, Rodney Holland, John (Carol) Holland, Elaine “Mickey” McIntosh; and granddaughter Michele Holland.
The family would like to thank the caregivers at Salem Manor for their compassion and kindness and for making Ruth’s final years comfortable.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, April 21, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church (5.5 km south of Leduc on Hwy 2A, and 5 km east on Glen Park Road).
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, RR #2 Station Main, Leduc, AB T9E 2X2; or Salem Manor Nursing Home, 4419 – 46 Street, Leduc, AB T9E 6L2.
