Obituary for Helen Cameron (Halbert)
It is with profound sadness that our family announces the death of our dear mother, Helen Cameron (nee Halbert) on Tuesday, October 31 at her home with her loving family close by. Helen was born on August 9, 1935 to Jean and Ken Halbert (predeceased) in Coniston, Ontario, the first of six children. After moving to Niagara Falls with her family, she attended Stamford Collegiate High School. Once she graduated, Helen started working as a teller at the Royal Bank in Chippawa. It was there that she met Alex Cameron (predeceased). The two were wed in 1954 and, together, raised 11 children, 30 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren. Caring for a family of that size is a true testament to Helen’s kind, loving, welcoming and forgiving nature. Family was most important to Helen and she loved having her home filled with her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, other family members and friends. Helen’s home was open to everyone and she was happy to feed them and treat them to her delicious desserts made with butter and love!
Helen is survived by her children: Jean Cameron (Ken McCourt) of Niagara Falls; Heather Gagnon (Chip) of Hanmer; Dale Mason (Carl) of Okotoks, Alberta; Lynn Mercier (Chester predeceased) of Wahnipitae; Sandra Mehmet (Chico) of Garson; Carolyn Cameron (Gord Hicks) of Sudbury; Laurie Pollock (Fred) of Sudbury; Shelley Cameron Gagnon (Rob) of Val Caron; Vickie Cameron (Mike Clement) of Garson and Valerie Smith (Jim) of Garson. Helen will be bereaved by her brothers and sisters: Ken Halbert (Barb); Gloria Derhodge (Mickey predeceased); Tom Halbert (Joyce); Evie Knezevich (Buddy predeceased); and brother-in-law Colin Barmstone (sister Joy predeceased). As well as her extended Cameron family, her cousins, especially Betty Rapien and her many neices and nephews.
Helen was a brilliant woman who put the needs of others above her own. She was vibrant, witty, entertaining and playful. She always had a smile and kind words for her loved ones. She was creative, positive and nurturing. Helen was also very wise. She understood even what we did not say. She was loved by many, and will be mourned by all who knew her.
Our family would like to express our thanks to all those who took part in her care, especially Dr. Ravi Singh and his team who celebrated her Giant Tiger excursions, as well as her nurse Tracy. We will also be forever grateful to all those who reached out to her, called and visited her, especially Josée Blais, her “newest” daughter. You all brought great joy to her.
Visitation will be held in the Jackson and Barnard Funeral Home, 233 Larch Street, Sudbury, on Sunday, November 5, 2017 from 2-5 and 7-9pm. A Funeral Mass will take place at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 255 Church Street, Garson, on Monday, November 6, 2017 at 10:00 am.
