Death Notice
Harold Freeman of St. Clair Shores, Michigan passed away peacefully in his home on Wednesday, November 1, 2017. “A life well lived”.
Born in Peterborough, Ontario, May 12, 1922, Mr. Freeman lived an extraordinary life. After his service in the Royal Canadian Airforce he moved his family to Michigan. Preceded in death by his bride, Pearl, Harold joins her as well as a cast of family and friends; no doubt welcomed with open arms and cheers. With a glint in his eyes, he found humor in all situations and his unmistakable laugh will carry on in our memories for a lifetime. Fiercely loyal and kind, he lived his life humbly with little need for great luxury. A skilled craftsman, he could fix or reengineer most anything. As a tool and die man, he worked long and hard hours making a living for his family. He made a life by the way he enjoyed being with the ones he loved. Always up for a project, a poker game or a cold beer; time spent together was always enjoyable and festive. Diligence and perseverance are his inheritance to his daughter and granddaughters. A job worth doing was always worth doing well. His investment of time spent listening to his girls was invaluable; sharing bits of wisdom laced in wit; he taught us how to take life in stride and to always have a voice. He will be remembered for his stark honesty and his fervent concern for others. Grandpa loved quietly, but he loved well.
He laid to rest his wife, Pearl, sisters: Vi, Betty and Marg, daughter Sandra, and son-in-law Dale. He will be missed by his beloved daughter, Joan (Greg), who will carry on his keen wit, diligence and kindness. His granddaughters, Samantha (Rick) and Erin (Tavis) will continue the legacy of raising the next generation with humor, wisdom and grace. Great-grandchildren, Maxwell, Ava and Caroline, rejoice in the awesome opportunity to have had deep and meaningful relationships with their Poppa. His love for them was undeniable and boundless. Harold leaves behind his loving sister, Dot, brother-in-law Wimp and a host of nephews and nieces; all who will continue to feel the great impact he had on their lives.
We want to thank the nurses at Beaumont Hospice, most especially Sonya, who from the beginning, understood the man for whom she cared; calling him “Boss “, she appreciated his profound independence and tenacity. We all did.
There will be a memorial open house held to celebrate Harold’s life on Sunday, November 5, 2017 in the Family Centre at Smith Funeral Home, 1576 London Line, Sarnia, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. with a time of tribute at 2:00 p.m. A private interment will take place at Lakeview Cemetery.
