MEYER, Hans Bernd
Hans Meyer passed away peacefully at home on May 18, 2017 at the age of 76 years.
He was the loving father of Hans Eduard (Tina) of Cheadle, AB, Monika of Port Townsend, WA and Hans Christian (Karry) of Athabasca, AB. Hans will also be dearly missed by his six grandchildren Stephanie, Hans Erik, Jack, Heike, Hans Austin and Hans Owen and lovingly remembered by his nieces Frauke, Antje, Barbie, nephew Hans Bernhard, sisters-in-law Elisabeth and Ute, and sister Frauke, as well as many others to whom he was a generous friend and mentor. Hans was predeceased by his father, Hans Eduard, and mother, Herta-Maria, brothers Hans Holm and Hans Jorg, and son Hans Paul.
Hans served as a chef aboard various vessels in the German Navy as part of NATO. He immigrated to Canada in 1965 with only his suitcase and $100. His first job was as Head Chef at the Palliser Hotel in Calgary. He eventually purchased a jackhammer and compressor which was the start of his own demolition business, Able Demolition Services.
He was an exceptionally passionate and hard-working man, who got great pleasure from cooking, dancing, gardening, carving and many projects of all kinds. Family was extremely important to him — he loved it when he could get all his children and grandchildren together. He was generous with his family and friends, his employees and even random strangers who needed a hand. He was known as a storyteller with a relentless sense of humour, as anyone who crossed his path could attest. He was widely respected in the demolition and construction industries in Calgary. He will be dearly missed.
As Hans wished, there will be a Celebration of his Life this summer; details to be announced at a later date.
