Obituary Overview
Graham Simpson
The family announces with profound sadness that Graham passed away peacefully at the Royal University Hospital (RUH) in Saskatoon on November 19, 2017. Born in Wellington, New Zealand, Graham obtained Bachelor and Master’s degrees in Agriculture before obtaining his Ph.D. in Plant Physiology at the University of London, England in 1959. He started his career that same year in the Department of Crop Science at the University of Saskatchewan. After serving as the first Director of the Crop Development Centre from 1971-74, Graham went onto become the Director of the International Development Centre, Saskatoon Drought project. Professor Emeritus Simpson was inducted into the Saskatchewan Agricultural Hall of Fame in 2012. Predeceased by his parents in New Zealand, Guy and Maisie Simpson, his sister, Marie Simpson and his daughter-in-law, Natalia Pohila (Bilow), Graham leaves his loving wife, Maree, his sister Peggy Pratt (Mick), three children Erika, Janet, Michael and two step children, Cheryle (Farley), and Richard. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Brandt, Howard Ben, Genevieve, Luca, Haiden, Anya, Veronica, and his many nieces and nephews. In 1961, Graham married Margarete Erika Simpson (Brandt) and they raised three children in Saskatoon before divorcing in 1994. In 2005, Graham married Maree Salikin with whom he shared over fourteen happy years during which they did everything together. He met Maree while she was stealing rhubarb from his garden. Together they enjoyed a life of travelling, fun, family get-togethers and friendships. They did everything together. Throughout his lifetime, Dr. Simpson had a profound influence on his family, friends and students. He was very generous in the attention spent over many decades to the Inter-Church Uranium Committee (ICUC) and the time spent at St. Matthews Anglican Church, forty years of singing in the University Choir, as well as being a dedicated hard working scholar.
