Maher, Gladys Marian Maher, age 97 of Herbert, Saskatchewan formerly of Swift Current, Saskatchewan passed away January 13, 2017 at Herbert Integrated Health Facility. The funeral service was held at 1:00 pm, January 28, 2017 from Christ The Redeemer Catholic Church with Rev. Msgr. Reymundo Asis officiating. The organist was Marlene Dolter accompanied by Christ The Redeemer church choir. The readers were Adeline Klein and Margaret Monk. Ushers were Marg Marcsh and Barbara Kulhman. Intentions were given by Ann Stewardson. The honorary pallbearers were all who shared in her life. The interment was held at Mount Pleasant Burial Park. Gladys is survived by her children Gary (Carolyn) Maher of Fairmont Hot Springs, BC; Rick (Alison) Maher of Vancouver, BC; Judy Maher of Swift Current, SK; her sister Kathareen Bell of Burnaby, BC. She was predeceased by her parents Mary Catherine Victoria (Kit) Bell, George Thomas (Frank) Bell; her husband William Leo Maher; her sister Joyce Waker and brother-in-law Eugene Waker. Gladys was born Dec. 4, 1919 at her Williams grandparent’s home south of Beverly, Saskatchewan. Gladys attended Seward Hill School till grade 12 which she took at the Swift Current Collegiate. The teacher who taught her last 3 years at Seward Hill School was Bill Maher whom she married June 8, 1946. In 1938, the family moved into Swift Current. Gladys took a cooking and sewing class and upon completion of the course got a job as a cook at the Elkhorn Hotel in Morse. She was famous for her pies. Following that she went to Cypress Hills Provincial Park cooking at the Chalet. In October 1940, she went to work at Woolworths where she worked for 9 years as a bookkeeper. In 1945, her parents moved to Calgary. Gladys married Bill Maher from Cabri, Saskatchewan on June 8, 1946 at Sacred Heart Church. They drove to the Grant Hall Inn in Moose Jaw and on to Waskesiu Lake for their honeymoon. Gladys and Bill had 3 children, Gary, Rick, and Judy. They continued farming the Maher land at Cabri, Sk. which became a century farm in 2006. She was a stay-at-home Mom till 1975 when Woolworths opened a new store in the Wheatland Mall. She was well known as the fabric lady and loved her job. Bill died Nov. 13, 1983. Gladys retired from Woolworths in 1986. She enjoyed visiting her children. She enjoyed soaking up the mineral waters of the Fairmont Hot Springs where Gary & Carolyn would take her, lounging on the deck at Mara Lake with Rick & Alison, and the many trips she took with Judy through Alberta and British Columbia. Gladys loved to volunteer and was a member of the CWL (Catholic Women’s League). Gladys loved to play bridge 2 to 3 times a week. She enjoyed sewing, knitting, crocheting, gardening and learning new crafts. Many of her evenings were spend reading a good book. Upon her retirement she travelled with her sister Kathareen to China (where they walked the Great Wall of China), Japan, France, England, Ireland (kissed the Blarney stone), Scotland, Wales, Hawaii, and Yellowstone Park. She enjoyed concerts, and live theatre attending plays and musicals. She liked to start her day with either yoga in the morning or going to the gym at the age of 92 or walking through the parks. She liked swimming and when her sister Joyce Waker would call, she was more than happy to go for a swim in the pool. She had a love of birds and enjoyed sitting in the backyard watching and listening to them. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends having coffee or her weekly luncheons with friends. Gladys was kind, patient, generous, pleasant, easy going (“Just make the best of it!”), and most of all she was known for her smile (“A smile will get you through any storm.”).
