It is with great sadness that the family of Gerald ‘Jerry’ Douglas Gilbertson announce his passing. Jerry was born and raised in Moose Jaw, Sask., and in 36 years living in Cochrane, his love for the Saskatchewan Roughriders never wavered. He was tireless in his volunteer efforts — a minor-hockey manager and ice-scheduler, a minor-baseball president and umpire, a fixture at school fundraising events and the guy in the Santa Claus costume at staff parties and other Christmas celebrations. He loved to cook, always enough for two days worth of leftovers, and also enjoyed music, getaways to the lake, golf, curling and later his walks with the boys. Jerry’s family — Marcia, his kids Wes (Theresa) and Kendra (Mat), his brother Ken (Lynne) and his nieces and nephews — will cherish the memories of his delicious home-cooked meals, his laugh and his love for the holidays, especially ones that you could dress up for. His kids will always be grateful that he assembled that trampoline immediately after bringing it home, even though it was pouring rain.
Family and friends will gather for a celebration of Jerry’s life at 2 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 6, at the Cochrane Lions Club Event Centre. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to 1835 House/Recovery Acres Society in Calgary or consider honouring Jerry’s legacy by volunteering in your community.
