Gertrude “Gertie” Lamond McArthur
1920 – 2017
It is with heavy hearts, we the family of Gertrude (Gertie) McArthur announce her passing. Gertie passed away in the early morning hours of Monday, January 16th, 2017, at the age of 96, with family at her side at the Gilbert Plains Personal Care Home.
Gertie was born in Shortdale, Manitoba on January 25th, 1920 to parents Jack and Ellen (nee Faulkoner) Hay. She was one of 11 children, seven boys and four girls. She attended school in Roblin.
As a young girl she worked for the McArthur family as a housekeeper and this is where she met her future husband Cliff. On December 14, 1939, they were married. They moved to a farm in the Tummel, Manitoba district. They were blessed with two daughters, Joyce and Judy.
Gertie loved to cook, quilt, knit and crochet. She also loved to dance! Many Sunday’s were spent having family suppers and picnics. She belonged to the Tummel United Church Ladies Aide and the Roblin Drop-In Center.
Gertie was predeceased by her parents, Jack and Ellen Hay; her husband Cliff, her father and mother-in-law Donald and Anna; her brothers-in-law, Jack and Vi, Wilf and Mary, Gordon and Irene and Ellen, Bill and Lena and Lorraine, and Jim and Hope, her sisters-in-law Helena and Morley Sommer, and Gladys McArthur, grandson Jeffrey Thomson and son-in-law, John Westra. Gertie was also predeceased by her brothers, Jack (Dolly), George (Ruth), Victor, Gordon (Nora), Gerald (Yvonne), Norman (Doris), and Murray; and her sisters Edith (John) Cameron and Jean (Frank) Dayson.
Gertie leaves to mourn her daughters, Joyce Westra and Judy Thomson; three grandchildren and four great grandchildren; her sister Margaret Hay; sisters in law Alice (Victor) and Grace (Murray) and many nieces and nephews and other extended family.
A graveside service will be held at a later date at Tummel Deer Park Cemetery.
