Gertrude Evelyn McCarthy – 2017

Gertrude Evelyn McCarthy
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our
Mum and Nana, Gertrude Evelyn McCarthy, who died peacefully at 97,
with family by her side, at The Moncton City Hospital on June 27,
2017.
Born in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia on January 16, 1920, she was
the daughter of the late William Carrigan and Frances (Reynolds)
Carrigan of Springhill, Nova Scotia.
A loving mother and grandmother, Gert’s devotion
was to her husband and the family they raised together. She made
family a priority and would not pass up an opportunity to share in
life’s celebrations. Playing bridge and going on bus tours
were her passion, where she made life-long friends and shared many
laughs. She cared deeply for her caregivers, who gave her such
compassionate care and love – especially Love Joy and Lian.
Gert attended St. Bernard’s Roman Catholic Church and was a
long standing member of the Catholic Women’s League. She
will be lovingly remembered for her strength and character, her love
of music and her fierce loyalty to her family, friends and faith.
She married the love of her life, George McCarthy on July
1st, 1946. She is survived by daughter, Frances
Robichaud (late Rob) of Moncton; son, Bill McCarthy (Nancy) of
Burtt’s Corner and son-in-law, Ken MacQuarrie (Ann-Marie) of
Caissie Cape; her grandchildren, James, Patricia, Michael, Sandra,
Greg, Janet, Aaron, Ethan, Amos and Kaelen; as well as her 20 great
grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her
husband, George McCarthy (2014); daughters, Mary McCarthy and Donna
MacQuarrie; son-in-law, Rob Robichaud.
Visitation at Fergusons Funeral Home, 1657 Mountain Road,
Moncton (858-1995) on Monday from 2:00 to 4:00 pm. A funeral Mass to
celebrate and honour Gertrude’s life will be held from St.
Bernard’s Roman Catholic Church (Botsford and Queen Streets)
on Tuesday, July 4, 2017 at 11:00 am with Rev. Allison Carroll
presiding. Reception in the Church Hall following Mass. Interment will
be in Elmwood Cemetery.
In memory of Gertrude, donations to St. Bernard’s
Roman Catholic Church or a memorial of the donor’s choice
would be appreciated. Online condolences at
