Geraldine Winnifred (Crowell) Barr
1922-2017
Geraldine Winnifred (Crowell) Barr, 94, passed away August
23, 2017 at the Pine Grove Nursing Home in Fredericton, NB.
Gerry was born in Charlesville, Nova Scotia, on October 15,
1922. She was the seventh child of Hallet Ray and Alva
Letitia Crowell (Hubbard).
Gerry is survived by her two sons, Keith (Karoline) Barr and
Don (Vivian Pollock) Barr; two grandchildren, Scott (Becky) and
Allyson and one great grandchild (Noah); two sisters Leona Royal and
Eileen Paul; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Gerry was predeceased by her husband William Grant Barr
(1971); stillborn twin son and daughter (1959) and a premature son
(1960); four sisters, Teresa Galbreath, Dora Barkhouse, Mary Berry,
Vida Hamilton and three brothers, Arnold Crowell, Freeland Crowell and
Keith Crowell.
During the Second World War, Gerry worked as an orderly at
the hospital in Yarmouth. It was there that she met William
(Bill) Barr. Bill was a Flight Sergeant in the RCAF and was
stationed at Yarmouth. They were married on June 12,
1942. When Bill was transferred to St. Jean, Quebec for
further training Gerry went with him and boarded in Montreal where she
worked as a stenographer for Federal Aircraft Limited.
Bill worked at several jobs after being discharged from the
Air Force following the war and eventually they settled in Mattawa,
ON. in 1952. Gerry spent a number of years as a housewife
and mother as she and Bill raised their two sons. Then, in
1961, Gerry began working at the Bank of Nova Scotia in
Mattawa. Following the death of her husband in December
1971, Gerry transferred with the bank to a branch in London,
ON. She retired from banking in 1985 and moved to
Fredericton, NB to be close to her son Keith and her two
grandchildren, Scott and Allyson.
While living in Mattawa, Gerry was involved in various
community organizations including the United Church Women.
She was a member of the committee that organized a public library in
Mattawa and even coached a Pee Wee hockey team with one of her friends
for a couple of years.
Special thanks to the staff at the Pine Grove Nursing Home
who provided excellent care and attention.
