George Stubbard age 75 of Reserve Mines passed away on Wednesday, December 27, 2017 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Roderick and Isabella (Frew) McWhirter.
In George’s younger years he worked at the mines and later at Well Wood Workers where he later used his skills to become a cabinet maker. He will be remembered by many as the Glace Bay Colonels pitching coach. George loved working with children and did so for over 30 years. He was the first umpire east of Montreal to ump at Williamsport, Pennsylvania. He had a great partner in crime for his 45 card games, friend Henry Young. Together they chuckled at their many wins. Many will miss watching him on the dance floor, with his grace he acquired several trophies throughout the years.
George was a valued member of the Reserve Mines Pensioners Club, he attended all special events associated with the club in the surrounding areas.
He is survived by his daughter, Ida (Joe) O’Reilly, Halifax; sons, George (Lori), Red Deer, Alberta , Davey (Lindsay), Glace Bay, Craig, Glace Bay; brother, Erville (Billy), Reserve Mines; sisters, Maurina Stubbard, Glace Bay, Carol (James) Williams, Glace Bay, Velma McNeil (Al Burke) , Reserve Mines, Isabel (Andrew) Donovan, Reserve Mines; grandchildren, Tonya, Cal, Nanci-Gayle, Morgan, Paige, Sawyer, Kelsey, Breton, Wyatt, Elin, in-laws , Judy (Bill) , Stan, Sonny, Ernel, and his son-in law, Cal. He cherished every one of his grandchildren and they will miss him dearly. George was treasured and will be missed by all his nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, George was predeceased by his ex wife, Ann (McLean) Stubbard, his children, Wanda McNeil, Rod ‘Tub’ Stubbard ; grandchildren, Braedon, Jared; siblings, Shelly, Marion Saccary, Josie Timmons, Lillian Paulin, Gerry Turnbull and nephew, Sgt. Jimmy McNeil.
